Pizzey's

Started by: kayjay (19)

Hi,

I was looking for some help on the Pizzey family in wigan.

Mainly I am looking to find out about Mary-Jane Pizzey who had a son called Harold Pizzey in 1920,she lived at 3 crown street at the time of his birth.

I think her maiden name was Knowles not 100% and her fathers name may have been Joseph, also she may have been widowed early on,, again this is guess work from the little research I have done.

I know harold went on to get married to Lily Ince in and they had a son called Harold in 1940.

If anyone has any information on this family please do get in touch.

these are my grandparents and I do not know much about them or have any pictures of them so anything would help.

Thank you

Mary Jane Knowles married Thomas Pizey ( only one Z )at Wigan register office in 1902.
Thomas Pizey died aged 33 in 1918

Mary Jane Pizzey then married John Thomas Wilkinson at Christ Church Ince in 1921
Her father was named as Joseph Knowles.

The birth registers for 1920 give the maiden name of the mother of Harold Pizzey as "Pizzey", which is rather strange.

There was a previous birth in 1916 for a HENRY PIZZEY in the subdistrict of Hindley where the maiden name of the mother is given as KNOWLES. You would need to look at the original certificate to see whether HENRY or HARRY is recorded. I say this because there is the following baptism on Lan-OPC:

Baptism: 8 Nov 1916 All Saints, Hindley, Lancashire, England
Harry Pizie - [Child] of Thomas Pizie & Jane
Born: 4 Aug 1916
Abode: 3 Frederic St
Occupation: Collier
Notes: P
Baptised by: J.S. Robson Curate
Register: Baptisms 1915 - 1925, Page 22, Entry 176

He died apparently, but I will write again later.

Mary Jane Knowles (called "Jane" probably to distinguish her from her sister Mary Ann) was born in 1880 (and so she was older than she said she was at her second marriage) to Joseph Knowles and Mary Ann Wood, who had married at St George's church in 1867.

The 1881 census shows Joseph Knowles (37) living with wife Ann (Mary has been dropped) and the children Richard (11), Isabella (9), Joseph (5) and Mary Jane (4 months). The interesting thing is that Lancashire births and also the records on ancestry show no birth of a Joseph to a mother named Wood(s). The two born in the Hindley district have mothers named Jackson and Seddon respectively. VERY STRANGE!!
But Joseph and (Mary) Ann had had more children Peter, b. 1868,died at 8 weeks in August of that year and Mary Ann, b. 1978, died aged 5 minutes in October 1878. There were at least two more - John, b. 1883, died aged 5 months and Catherine, b. 1888, who died aged 15 months. All these children are buried at Ince Cemetery.
What is really peculiar is that the family seem to disappear in the 1891 and 1901 censuses. There is another Joseph of a similar age who married Margaret Jackson as a widower in 1872. At first I was really confused since the maiden name of the mother of little Joseph in the 1881 census was also Jackson. But anyway after a lot of crosschecking, it turns out that widower Joseph had previously been married to someone called Ellen. I think the family must still have been in Wigan as someone called Isabella Knowles has a child called Joseph in 1894, who dies when he is one month old. She is living in Broom Street.

In 1911 a widow called Mary Ann Knowles, a servant aged abt. 64 is living at 30 Brook Street, Ince. In the same census Mary Jane and Thomas Pizzey were living at 14 Back Brook Street, Ince. In fact, on examining the next page of the schedule, I discovered that Mary Ann and Thomas and Mary Jane were living next door to each other. I think one can presume that this Mary Ann Knowles was Mary Jane's mother and that Joseph was by then dead.

There is a death in Hindley in 1896. But I think this was the Joseph who married Margaret Jackson.

I need to think about this a bit more and also to try and find out where Joseph and (Mary)Ann were in 1891 and 1901.
