mickey dalton.
Started by: dannyboy1948 (41) Report abuse
there must be loads of people about my age that must remember one of wigans old characters, michael dalton. i remember employing him briefly as a bottle snatcher in the crofters in early 1979.

I remember the name Mickey Dalton. I've heard my older brother talk about him but can't remember what was said, except to say that he was quite a character. Didn't he walk around wearing a cravat - quite a dandy in fact, or am I on the wrong person? Will try to find out more if I can.

Posted by: samster (inactive) Report abuse
You're right mollie m, Mickey was quite a dapper dresser, always with a flower in his buttonhole. Known as the Police's helper 'cos he supposedly helped them 'solve' their crimes, due to him keeping his ear to the ground!

Posted by: jools (52) Report abuse
Yes I remember Micky Dalton he was around at the same time as "Clapper" who always hung around the old fruit market. You are right I remember Mickey as quite a "dandy" who sometimes wore an evening jacket with a flower in the lapel (nicked from the park) and he sometimes wore white spats over his shoes.

anybody who went round wigan in 60s and70s knew MICKEY DALTON,never worked a day in his life, and yes he was a police informer,a horrible specimen of the human race

Posted by: antar (639) Report abuse
not as horrible as that son of his . a few years ago it was either the post or that other so called paper the observer they were going to do an article on local characters and they decided on mickey dalton but it never happened they must have delved deeper for a change and found out a few facts .

I am sure that this is the same Mickey Dalton who lived in The Grove in Ince in the 40s.I would have been about 7 or 8 and can remember watching his house burn down. The house then was to the left of the old Conquering Hero pub.Today there is a derelict shop on that site.
I presume that is when he could have moved to the addresses in Pemberton that have been mentioned.
Are there any old Incers who can verify this for me?

Posted by: ŠartŠ (6152) Report abuse
Micky originally lived off Greenough St. Probably Regent, Turner or Vaughan St....one of those..Daughters name was Sheila..

Posted by: stey fishwick (45) Report abuse
Yes Dave, have a twin brother Andy, and is it same Dave Whittle i know from Springy. Also re photo Mickey obnoxious in foreground looking very dapper, wonder if his kids dressed as smart, very unlikely, the owd get was out every afternoon and neet, something had to go short, you can be sure it would not be the toxic owd get

Posted by: judyteen (907)  Report abuse
i used to work with his daughter sheila at plesseys lamberhead green, it was sheila who got that story banned from the observer

Stey Fishwick. glad to see you are going strong and unlike a lot of people on this site your memory is not clouded with fairy dust. As for the photo i used to go out with a girl who worked in the Bank on the corner . her name was Jenette Ryan not seen her for 40 years

Posted by: stey fishwick (45) Report abuse
Dave, stop telling everybody we are owd wrinklies, think we are them off telly, angry owd men.Unfortunately cannot remember 40 yrs back, job remember 40 hrs since, especially after Monday neet,1 of my 2 neets out a week

stey fishwick--- your wrong about this
anybody who went round wigan in 60s and70s knew MICKEY DALTON,never worked a day in his life,

I know for a fact that he worked on the building site at Reeds,Goose Green(everyday)about 1961, helping to build the new office block that was the first and only time that I ever met him,

Posted by: andycapp (inactive) Report abuse
Before posting anything derogatory about Mickey. I would find out who his sister is and who her sons are. Then when I found out who they are ? I would vanish.

Posted by: xrh59 (inactive) Report abuse
Evelyn, Micky did live in Ince around the time you mention, he could always be found near the viaducts and Canal street or at Ince station waiting for my father to come home on leave. He knew he would get a good feed at my grandmother's and a couple of pints off my dad. My dad would say that Mickey knew when he was due for leave before he did. He was never a "police informer" that is fact and not a tale that was put about by the plastic gangsters of the time, he did infact work on several building sites around Wigan. Folk should look a little nearer to home when accusing others of being such an obnoxiuos person.

I agree with all you say.I grew up with them in scholes, he was not an "informer"
Sure it is people that did not know him......and at this time, never met him, that have a go at him from hearsay. I knew the family, 1952-----present.

I am new to this site, and can speak(write) of Scholes and surrounding areas, from 1952 to present. Not on;y the Daltons, but Every one that is spoke of this day. I am a St Pats lad, born in Ireland and Father Murphy baptised me.

I enjoy this site, but would ask that no one should castigate until or unless they know the facts first hand.

I enjoy reading ALL the txts on here and, as most seem to come from the Scholes, Wigan Centre area, have a keen interest.
I trust I have offended no one, thank you.

Question: Does anyone recall the large boulder in Actons court(opp what used to be Knights Chemist) and th young lad that played the accordion at pub closing time...and made many a half crown from the people returning from The Angel...Crown and Anchor....Bluebell...Fleece...Shovel and Broom. ?

As an addendum.......Boltons Chemist? bottom of Scholes? Vimto? or earlier.... The chinese laundry?

Yes... I was with the Mc Farlanes and the Mc Gurrins and the Breheneys and the Byrnes and the Hamills!!!

Thank you take care all of you

I go to Newcastle ....... God rest Bobby Robson. My son is an Irish Geordie

Hello Celtic4 there are loads of photos of Scholes and St. Pats on the "Photos of Wigan" at the top left of this page, just click on it and go on 'Album' then search for schools and Scholes. Plenty to help you reminisce. Good luck.

Any idea when the photograph was taken?

Posted by: ŠartŠ (6152) Report abuse
I would say probably the 50's, that Standard Vanguard is like new & an early model,(split windscreen), & has the Wigan borough "JP" number plate, (the other being "EK")
Mickey would have been living in Scholes (off Greenough St) at the time..

Not sure when Nobby took over...I know that when he left there he went to the Horseshoe Standish.
I think it was last year, the last time I saw Nobby,in the market. I believe he died shortly after.

The clock may have been stopped for maintenance Stuart....

Unless you know differently, of course

I don't think it's so long ago the last time I saw him

Art, Nobbys wife Norah has been dead two years or so and she lived three or four years or so longer than him. It's surprising how time flies.

I'll ask Walt Green next time i drop on him, sure its not 2 years since i spoke to Nora, didn't know she had left us,lovely woman, loved her to bits, straight as a dye.I know time flies but certain not 6 years since i attended Nobby's funeral, must have been away when Nora went

I remember Micky Dalton, when I was the Newtown Bobby, covering Norly Worsley and Marsh Green on my own ,on foot. Micky couldn't tell you what day it was never mind anything useful. He would wear a bowler hat in winter, and a straw boater in summer, always a flower in his button hole, and usually pinched from a neighbour's garden. But I never knew him to do( or be caught) doing anything too wrong.

I only remember Mickey as a regular in the Bee's Knees, when John Harper had it
