I had family in Upholland till the 1980's, and spent a lot of my early life there. Dont know about now but bingo nut's like my mum went to The Workingmens club in Mill Lane, St Theresa's Club, next to the church and The Labour club on the way to Digmoor. Pubs were The White Lion, across from the parish church, The Brittania, opposite the library, The Old Dog,on Alma hill and of course the dear old Vic in Hallgreen.

I suppose they go and sit on Ashurst Beacon park during the summer, or go for a ramble over Elmers Green Well that's what I did when I lived in UpHolland, but that was 45 years ago

Hi dennis

I lived on Delamere way, that changed its name from Queensway when the new town was built. Before that it was Digmoor, on Digmoor Farm (owned by Bailies of Bailies Shop in Mesnes Street), and before that Gidlow Lane

Hi Weatherwax - what year did you live in Delamere Way ????

Replied: 20th May 2014 at 19:57

Posted by: Weatherwax (317)

We moved from Digmoor to Queensway(Delamere Way,) in 1957. When I say we, I mean my parents and I. I was, at the time, going to Digmoor primary school. I went to Grammar school and left at fifteen to start work, and married from Delamere way, Then came back after Divorce. So all in all, it would be about 1976,when I finally left, although I often popped back until my parents died over the winter of 1980/81

Weatherwax - Would the names Hopkinson and/or Gore mean anything to you ?

Replied: 21st May 2014 at 19:44

Posted by: Weatherwax (317)

Hi dennis,
Hopkinson doesnt strike a chord, but Gore does. I am sure there was a family of that name that lived near us. Other names I remember from then are Shaws, Cullen, Rigby, Welsby, Wynn, Jones, Guest,Fairhurst all from the top end of Delamere Way.

tonker, What was your friend's name? If he was from the lower modern end, its unlikely I would know him

His name's Dave Dean. His dad had a red and yellow lorry, Vince Dean Haulage!

Hi tonker,
That Family name I know, although I'm afraid I wouldnt know any individual names. As for the lorry, well, I am hopeless at anything with wheels on, and I shouldnt be as my Dad was a long distance driver nearly all his life.

Hi dennis,

I dont mind you knowing my real name, but I dont know how I can let you know without letting everyone know, and that I dont want to do.
If you are or were on Wigan Rejects there is no problem, as there is a private message function, and I am still weatherwax on the board. Otherwise I dont know how we can do it.
