In the 1970's Soho Street had Peter's timber and builders yard across from the Air Training Corps Hut, The Army Cadets hut and then the long building of the Wigan Small Bore Rifle Club and when ASDA decided to expand, both Cadets huts and the Rifle Club were demolished in 1999 to make way for the two storie car park. The Cadet units went to the T.A.Centre in Canal Street, E.T.

I had relatives who lived in soho St & Sarjesen St, named Toohig. Went to Tommmy More so used to call at dinner-times. I remember a basket works somewhere, & at the main road a small cafe were the lads from school would get their dinner.

Peters timber yard was taken over by Raab Karcher Timber.
I got a brazilian mahogany front door from there,(still going strong) before ASDA aquired the land for their numerous development..

Hi Vivian.H my family lived in Wenlock St and i remember well Mrs leigh and the auntie who lived with her. I used to shop for Mrs leigh at a grocery shop in Scott lane who I think were realatives. My elder sister was a friend of Annie Leigh and next door lived Faircloughs. It was a small street and everything of interest seemed to happen in Soho St as I remeber as a child

been digging about quite a bit more in me tree recently , keeping busy and getting back on track with it, some interesting stuff in all lines coming up as well. the name toohig came up to eliza.. come up twice now as well...

That's one name I've never come across, Sue. I admire the way you've tackled the family tree as it's not straight forward but, then again, I don't suppose anybody's is. It's like a massive jig-saw puzzle and not something I could tackle, of that I'm sure. Keep it up missus.

not one you would have mollie unless you looked and linked it.. love it to be honest. dead surprising what turns up and who turns up.. love it mollie .
like you say its a bit like a jigsaw puzzle, but like a jigsaw puzzle everything falls into place eventually, just takes time.
just recently i have found a whole new load of stuff, some i had inclings of already , some i didnt. so thats all dead exciting

Very exciting indeed, lass. It takes a lot of dedication to start something like that, but more to see it through!

How far back have you got now?

Replied: 26th Oct 2009 at 23:32

Posted by: sue.64 (6879)

its not back now mollie. going sideways to get the branches.
for one line i got back to the mid 1700s.
now i am coming back to the present but going sidewards as well. what i am doing now is tackling marriages and kids from marriages, where they went, what they did .[ thats how i got too the name toohig].
theres some emmigration records i have found that i want to tackle as well. knocked me socks off that did by christ . didnt expcet that mollie. not got round to tackling them yet. other stuff to do first. bloody hell mollie this lot dont half keep me busy.
its like i said a post or two back. there was stuff i had inklings of and stuff i didnt. well , thats one of em, blew me out the water. tackle the easy stuff first then get back to that... phewwwww, exciting int it mollie. i will get back to it though moll, got the bit back between me teeth now like when i first started

Ya sounds like a thing possessed, but I understand why! Blimey Sue, it sounds like a full-time job there - I bet it is really. I can remember when we first found out that we were related, albeit third removed or summat like that. That was exciting to learn but you really sound as if you're having a whale of a time. If there's owt else you find out not for public viewing, email me as I'll be fascinated to learn of owt else from my branch of the tree if you find owt! I'm proud of your total enthusiasm with this.

oh yae, am possessed. back to doing what i left off months back mollie.
mollie its quite a bit more than third.
am loving it mollie. all the new bits to get a grip of as well. all noted down . where i found it, how and when
quite a few things dont add up though . thats why im looking deeper and going right through the sidelines. looking at all the marriages.all cottom marriages and who too and where they buggered off too
its hard work sometimes but ver y rewarding. i promise you this mollie, no stone will be left on its backside, every single bugger will be pinned down. where ,when and how.
see, its the emmigration things that bugger me up. keep leaving em but they are buggin the bleedin life out of me. but i will get through em same as with the rest. will let you know what comes up. will let you know when i link it all up

Sue, I'll have another word with my Aunty M. The Cottoms are a huge family with sprigs and twigs. Alice Cottom is a name that comes to mind, but I don't know where she lies in the plan of things, but I also mentioned "Cattern" if you remember, who could be Catherine. I'll do my best to get down to Aunty M's again, if I can just get a week without some sort of mishap! In fact, I'll email you if I find anything out. Wish you could meet her though!

mollie i can place Alice, no problem. in fact i told you ages back where alice fits in for my line.. yes, you mentioned 'Cattern'.
i did say back then that she cathrin.. thats right, cathrin'. . name pronounced by local dialect mollie.. she is Catherin cottom..

alice my great great grandmother is the sister of margaret cottom who became margaret cottom hardacre.. both are the sisters of my great great grandad
oh, and heres a whammy.. alice later married a hardacre
