i moved into the vine inn, in 1957 with my mam and dad, we decorated the front room upstairs to use as a bed room for my sister and i, on the wall by the window was a metal bracket, we did not know what it was for, we though it unsightly so dad removed it. all was well until whit Monday and walking day .the procession would be coming down caroline st. everyone was hanging out flags, dad found ours, it was massive,a large union jack on a pole that was six feet long and about 4"diameter,we found out what the bracket was used for.it took four of us to hold the flag out of the window while the procassion walked past,talk about laugh

owd robiner....did Mike Mahoney have a daughter, Kathleen?
When I was 15, my Aunty/Uncle took over the New Inn on Caroline St and I played the piano on Saturday nights there {for £1 a night!}
I distinctly remember a girl of that name who used to sing...she was quite a looker and always sang Starlight Serenade and I know her Father used to be with her.

Thanks owd robiner!
Not sure I remember his son but I must have played for him as well as I started in the clubs when I was 16 {1955 St Thomas' Labour} and worked in lots more after that.

I loved the song she sang and can still remember some of the words.

Hi owd robiner,I remember supping a pint in the Vine about 1959.It was the venue for meetings of the Wigan Aquarist Club.There is no need to tell you that the bar certainly made and left an impression (visualy).

dave,i dont remember the club meetings, but the bar,as you say was quite impressive. you stated on pub info that it looked like an alter,but there wasn't many saints in the vault.and those punps needed plenty of elbow grease to keep them clean.
