The 1908 map doesn't show any terraced houses there near the recreation ground, with the addition of those bungalows, it's much the same as it was then.

Hi Dave thanks for that data , I forgot to mention that it has been told to me that a family in particular a lady who eventually became my grandma! and on the 1901 census it gave her address as 273 Thomas Street, Hindley Green.
Now that would have been imagine you are at the top end of the street ie. where St.John's School is, then my grandma lived on the right roughtly 4-6 houses down.
For my wife's grand=parents lived on the left side at 272 today it's the last house terrace then the big detached bungalow! My grandma was a HART ,,ELIZABETH HART. SO once again Dave thanks for your interest.

Are these the houses? If so, they're still there.

Fantastic Dave when I opened "these" it showed Thomas st, swing it round to the row of bungalows and that's the row I am on about my wife who lived in Thomas Street since 1947 says she can't recall anything on that side until the bungalows were built in the 1960/70s like I say it's further back I am wanting to find out ! Dave did you get that off google? again friend thanks.

1925 Hindley Town Directory
East Street

Thomas Street Hindley Green
271 John Horrocks Colliery Fireman
273 Matthew Morphett Collier
275 Thomas Sharrock Collier
277 Thomas Gee Fitter
279 Ernest Jackson Colliery Fireman
281 John H. Jackson Colliery Fireman
283 Richard Grime Colliery Fireman

Your wife is quite correct Bear there was nothing on the other side only fields until the houses were built and beep54 knows she lived near me.

From the opposite end of Thomas Street (Leigh Road end) the house numbers started at 1 to 19 then Sarah Street and then started again at 42 to 30.

I have looked at the maps over the years and it is only in 1909 that Thomas Street appears it runs from where the houses start at St. John's School to Harrison Street. There has never been anything opposite the houses until the bungalows were built just fields.

My Grandparents who lived in Thomas Street were Hayes,my Mum was Maud Hayes, but sadly she died when I was only two,so I don't remember her,she had a brother Cliff who I remember,he lived in Thomas Street too.and a sister Nellie,I kept in touch with my auntie Nellie until she died, but lost touch with the others after a few years when my Dad remarried.I don't remember a Frank though.
