Golborne!
Does anyone have an explanation as to why Golborne has a Wigan telephone dialing code and is served by Wigan Council even though it has a Warrington post code and classed as Cheshire?

Over to you Tonker!!

same reason that Downall Green/Garswood have a Wigan post code and 01942 numbers but come under St Helens

The reason is simple. The postal service is operated by the Royal Mail and they set the postal areas. The telephone system is operated by British Telecom and they set the area codes. The UK is operated by The Government and they set the local government areas.
You'd may as well have asked "why does a Golborne house get Stockport milk delivered by a Haydock Milkman who has his float serviced at a Westhoughton garage"!

Whups, none of of Golborne is in Wigan & none of Golborne is in Warrington.
All of Golborne is in Golborne.
All of Golborne is under Wigan Council.
None of Golborne is under Warrington Council.

Yes, but, is Haydock Park in Golborne?
Replied: 23rd Jan 2015 at 20:10
No. It's in Haydock. It says so on the lid!
Actually, the six furlong sprint course does extend 200 yards into Golborne!

tonker - must admit, that I have lived in Ashton since 1972 and married a St Helens girl. We have lived in the same house since, brought up three Daughters who claim to be Wiganers and I've recently been advised that I have only just completed my apprenticeship to be an Ashtoner (not a Wiganer I must point out) I support WA as a season ticket holder but still have an affection for the Saints.
My point is... I wouldnt go back to St Helens..and its far from being Gods County.

I've heard that Golborne used to be classed as being in Warrington. My dad lived on Edge Green lane for a few years in the early 50s and Golborne was always referred to as being Golborne, Warrington, Cheshire. It's stupid how this system works though.

Ashtonman I don't know how old you are but Greater Manchester and Merseyside is something you may like to call it and so be it,
most OAPs will always say Lancashire England so just let it die out like the local dialects are doing in places round Ashton like Billinge,Garswood,Downall Green, just to mention a few at one time you could tell which side of Billinge in Lancashire they came from

Ashtonman, I don't know where you get your ideas from. There's no such thing as "Wigan and Leigh borough".

I meant that Wigan became linked to Leigh as part of the council meaning Wigan is apart of the Wigan and Leigh area, but yes I agree there's no such thing as Wigan and Leigh borough. Enough said
