Heinz Kitt Green

Started by: gaffer (7963)

I have recently acquired a set of photographs and maps relating to the building of the Heinz factory. The aerial views show the site clearance and building.
These two photographs are of a farm barn demolished as part of the project. The street sign on the side of the barn is Prescott Lane together with an advert for Pemberton fair. The photograhs were taken in 1955.
It's pity the barn was demolished.
A 1953 ordnance survey map was specially reprinted in 1963 to show the major road changes. It gives some wonderful detail of a large area including the Garswood Hall collieries.
The map shows the outline of the land purchase for the factory and solves a disputed topic on WW some time ago.
The factory building is on the Wigan side of the old borough, urban district boundary. The trailer park and old warehouse are on the Orrell side.

Looking at the age of that barn it is like something Timeteam would have loved to have got their hands on but it was in Wigan. "Get it knocked down and built on" should be made into the Wigan Coat-of-Arms, such a pity

I think this was Whalley house farm, which used to be in Prescot road, and was demolished to make way for the Heinz sports club.

Tommy

The farm was Catteralls farm.In the 1891 census Prescott Lane included Ackhurst Hall, Roburite and Gathurst Station.
A cattle trough stood in front of Catteralls Farm, chiselled from solid stone. It now rests in front of the Heinz building.
The photo shows the arrow pointing to the farm just before demolition. The telegraph poles are running along Prescott Lane.

Gaffer, why would they demolish Catteralls farm to build Heinz, it was opposite the junction with Lathom lane, behind the Miners Arms.

Dodger,

I misread the census list.

Cheers Gaffer, it seemed odd that they needed to demolish a barn that was about quarter of a mile away.
So the photo is Whalley House Farm.

I think Dodger is spot on about the farm. It was opposite Jaggers farm in Prescott Lane. I was born and brought up in Prescott Lane - lived there till moved to Dean Crescent around 1953. It'd be good to see these other photos which Gaffer has.

That barn was beautiful - shame it had to go - they don't make them like that anymore.

Hi Gaffer. I have just posted a request to find out where 'Baiting Houses' were! I don't suppose that 'Baiting House Farm' is and was one and the same place do you think?

Please have a look at my posting and tell me what you think?

Thanks

On old maps, there was a baiting house farm on the old mineral line, just north east of where Heinz is now.

The one on Gaffer's map will be the one your looking for.

Marie, Good to know somebody is noting the comments - or lack thereof which I have made, as you will notice I have a particular interest in this one, as I come from Kitt Green and used to play in those farms they are talking about. I have lived overseas so long I sometimes think I'm no longer qualified to comment. Especially with such luminaries as the Rev David, Tonker, Gaffer and all on WW.
I really enjoy the site and do make comments on photo a day.

bobbygal, I was brought up in Kitt Green but havn't lived there for 40 years, please dont think that you shouldn't join in and make comments. This is a wonderful site for those who have moved away as well as for those who still reside in Wigan. My mum still lives in Kitt Green she is probably the oldest resident at 101yrs.

MarieM none of the above - sorry. From Prescott Lane originally - then Dean Crescent also Kitt Green. Went to St Cuthbert's then Tommy More. There was 8 of us, 6 girls 2 sets of twins, only 2 boys.
I'm living in Sydney since 1971.
I think Alanrabster that the barn in question was gone long before that. See comments by Gaffer and Dodger.

bobbygal, Sorry to hear that 3 of your sisters have passed away, I lived at the bottom of Bell Lane, next door to Ridings - you will probably remember Alfred, everyone knew him. I remember your mother too, stood at your front door, shouting for you kids to go indoors for your tea. !!!
