A starry, starry night

Started by: jo anne (34726)

and it's extremely cowd in Wigan, but there are constellations.

The plough is the tail of Ursa Major (the great bear).

It's the only bit of astronomy I know - my Grandad pointed 'the plough' out to me one Christmas time.

What about everyone else?

When I was about ten I was camping out with some of my mates on a local park at Bryn. It was the middle of Summer and boiling hot and in the early hours we decided to lie on our sleeping bags outside of the tent. We all just lay there looking into the sky and I can remember clear as day what must have been a meteor shower, these streaks of light shooting across the sky.
By the way Jo anne, if you know only them two constellations you know much more than me!

I can only recognise 'the plough', Franny. I found out it was part of the great bear from my google.
I'll try to make that out too, but not sure if I'm brave enough now. It's cold out there!

Saturn is just south of Leo..A yellow coloured object, but rings not in good view at the mo, as they are face on.

Too much ale is bad for asteroids.

Does too much ale sometimes help you see stars though?

Well I once mistook a taxi-driver for Des O'Connor.

You're taking this thread for a ride, Mister.

Do you know anything about the night sky or have I not a telescope of getting a serious reply?

Yes, but I do have the odd squint.

I wish I did know more (no pun intended for once), but I'd probably get wound-up about light-pollution.

I looked up (in our back garden) earlier and the stars were clearly visible.
It was just a bit cowd to study them.

Did you see a recent episode (repeat) of QI? The panelists were asked to draw what they thought particular constelations were by joining up dots.

The point being, how the heck can you see a bear etc. in the patterns.

I missed QI - they are beyond me, too.
I like the plough though - like a saucepan.

That's my limit jo anne. The Plough.

There again, if I were to name it, it would be the sauepan.

Happen the stars were named before TeflonĀ® came out.

Happen so.

So QI featured Fry on the sky?

And apt for Wigan there's a great poem called: Sky in the Pie - I'll look for the words to post tomorrow.

A fine star once said; "The other day I was gazing up at the night sky, a purple vault fretted with a myriad points of light twinkling in wondrous formation, while shooting stars streaked across the heavens, and I thought: I really must repair the roof on this toilet."

Goodnight.

PS It was the late great Les Dawson.

Last two verses of Pie in the Sky!:

This sky is simply delicious
Why haven't I tried it before?
I can chew my way through to Eternity
And still have room left for more

Having acquired a taste for the Cosmos
I'll polish this sunset off soon
I can't wait to tuck into the night sky
Waiter! Please bring me the Moon!

Roger McGough

Good night.
