Friday December 30 2011 Wigan & Leigh Magistrates Court
Steeling is part of ******* **********'slife
Ms ****** *****, aged 56, of Skelmersdale stole various items belonging to Asda to the value of £52.97. The defendant failed to be at her place of abode and had in her possession a foil lined carrier bag used in connection with theft or in the course of. There was a commission of a further offence, whilst subject to order of conditional discharge.
The defendant has been a prolific offender over the past 40 years, and has continued to offend even when placed on community orders. Furthermore Ms ***** has offended shortly after her release from prison. The view of the bench is that nothing will persuade or change the habits of a lifetime. A custodial sentence of 6 months, was given to Ms ******.

I served on a jury for a case where the defendant was illiterate so had made a spoken statement which was recorded to be transcribed by an audio typist.
The transcript was read out in court and it told how the defendant had smuggled a mobile phone into the police cell when first arrested, (which he could have used to collaborate with someone to create an alibi).
The defendant disputed this; he'd done no such thing and had never stated that he had.
The judge halted proceedings whilst the original recording was obtained and checked. It was verified that the defendant was right about this dramatic discrepancy.

Top of the class! - Another good year for Wigan Borough GCSEs.
Education leaders are particular pleased that for those pupils achieving five or more A*-C (incl. English & Maths), Wigan's results improved year on year for the past five years from a base of 41.7% in 2006 to 57.1% in 2011.

Dear God!
The poor chap mus feel like he's been injured twice over.
Incidentally, re some of the comments on that article;
Sometimes (I don't know if it is the case here) the addresses given of the culprits are where they have moved to since the assault.
ie they could be local people who moved after the event.

Morgue?
I wondered about Americanisms and found an interesting item on Wiki.
In American English:
Morgue is used to refer to the room in which newspaper or magazine publishers keep their back issues and other historical references, as they serve a similar purpose to human morgues. See Morgue file.
Note also the confusion in WEP article about Registrars
Local funeral directors say Wigan’s Registra Service was capable of recording an average of 10 deaths per day
Mr Jones said that the situation was a “growing concern” for Wigan’s undertakers.
He said: “Now, where the families would check with the DWP or other bodies to inform them of the death of a loved one, the registrar service is doing it themselves under the new system and that means that they no longer have the time to record as many deaths as they did before because each one is taking twice as long to complete.
“I have spoken to one of the registras and he confirmed that it is causing them problems.

Not an error, but a right sensationalist lead paragraph.
Page 1 WEP yesterday.
'COULD a murderer be on the loose in Wigan?
That was the frightening question preying on the minds of many minds today following the tragic death of a Wigan man days after he was found collapsed in the street.'
Certainly a serious and very tragic event, but that is redolent of the climate of fear that was around West Yorkshire over thirty years ago.

It really annoyed me that.
I have now wish to go into the various 'theories' and speculations about the particular circumstances, and hope not to provoke others into doing so, until the facts emerge.
But I'm sure the Police aren't about to issue warnings.

I know they do prowl, Mac. One was only caught following a subsequent serious crime some years ago. But the thing that struck me is the element of scaremongering in the tone of the item.
Almost like a yearning for some 'penny dreadful' story to emerge.
Mind you, that must always be at the back of the mind of a journalist.

Another howler.
Horrible story. But another display of a lack of local knowledge.
Martyn Trezise, who had kicked the 42-year-old victim in the face as he desperately tried to cling onto the parapet of the bridge near the DW Stadium, was jailed for eight years.
Firefighters had to be called to the scene in Scholes and after they lowered a ladder down the steep embankment the victim managed to climb to safety.

Comments from yesterday have been removed from the WEP article.
The general point was the wisdom of employees of such a funded company actually taking industrial action.

In that article they got it mostly right. It's probably manufacturers blurb which has been C&P'd, even when it's in front of them they still got the caption wrong on the pic.
Spellcheck wouldn't help, if it doesn't have the word, (often the case with proper nouns), there is an option to add it to the vocabulary. If it's entered incorrectly, it will always be wrong.

Edit
A similar thing to that here:
A witness who alerted the emergency services told control staff the man was seen climbing on to a bridge and was then seen to fall.
More local knowledge.
The man, who is in his early 20s, fell around 25ft on to the tracks at Wigan Wallgate station from King Street West at around 1am on Sunday.
Here
Hope the lad is OK.
|
|
 |
Posted by: dostaf (50016) |

Which bridge?
King Street West has a parapet, the station buildiing and Wallgate forms the 'bridge'. Though there is a small 'landing' type platform adjacent to the building which overhangs the track. (KSW)

|
 |
Posted by: dostaf (50016) |

Possibly a signal gantry, but I don't think it forms a bridge.
I know it's pedantic when a poor lad is in a bad way, but again seems like iffy reporting.
Witness could have described it as a 'bridge'. Journalist with local knowledge would have questioned it.

BLOODY DISGUSTING!
'Johnson' 'Johnson's'
The piece is littered with this.
Such disrespect is usually reserved for the perpetrator, not the victim.
news,scotsman.com
Johnson’s death early on Saturday morning in a Manchester hospice at the age of 78 added a cruel twist to the brutal and unfinished saga of the Moors Murders, whose dark horror has hung over Britain for half a century
Johnson devoted 48 years to finding her boy, the cheeky and happy-go-lucky lad who loved marbles and cycling, and collected leaves in a scrapbook
Johnson always believed that Brady and Hindley, who were convicted in 1966 for the murders of John Kilbride, 12, Lesley Ann Downey, 10 and Edward Evans, 17, killed her son, although it was over 20 years before either of them admitted it.
The living room of Johnson’s modest Manchester home was adorned with pictures of Keith. There was Keith, toothy and smiley, hair a bit scruffy and wire-rimmed glasses askew, in the picture that had peered out from newspaper pages for years, now draped in rosary beads
This week, Johnson will be laid to rest, while her lost son still lies out somewhere on the moors.
FILTHY JOURNALISM

Edit:

New 100% eco sky lantern, no wire no metal part, use dragon wool instead of wire.
H&T is the leader of sky lantern manufacturer, the paper we use is best quality fireproof paper, even light each part of lantern, it will not catch fire. And we pay much attention on how to keep lantern more and more stably when flying. For package, each lantern is packed in a high quality pp bag, supply a colorful coated paper instruction, each bag also contains a small bag of dryer, keep the lantern paper not affect with damp. And this new type sky lantern is 100% biologic degradable, we use fiberglass rope (also name dragon wool) instead of wire, so this new type eco lantern is no metal part.

'Wicked' woman who befriended pensioners stole £10,000 from their bank accounts and spent the cash on luxury holidays
Tracey Cullen ( pictured right and left) from Doncaster, offered to help her victims with shopping before stealing their details to pay for a Caribbean cruise and a family trip to Disneyland Paris. Sentenced to 22 months at Sheffield Crown Court (main picture) it also emerged that she had 29 previous convictions, many for deception and stealing from her employers.
