CLOGS! My Grandkids don't believe me!

Started by: doclatino (259)

I was watching my grandson putting on his fancy new trainers. I said, 'All I 'ad was pumps!'
'Is that all you wore,' he said.
'And clogs' I sez.
'You never wore clogs did you. I thought only the Dutch wore them'
So, I had to go into the 'ins and outs' of wearing clogs - who wore them - why - putting new irons on when the old were so thin through sliding, they broke in half.
'Cor!!' he said.
('course - we live in Devon...)

Used to have to bash around the top with a hammer so as to soften the leather around the ankles. Same with my football boots - not the nice low soft ones they have today. Had to knock the studs in myself. The nails would stick into the soles of my feet!

Didn't they used to have 'cages' in schools - full of black 'pumps - marked in sizes with white paint? No one ever had their own pumps..

Yes they did have cages with black pumps and sizes. The teacher was always waiting for me 'cause I had irons on my clogs, made hell of a noise on the wooden floors. "Mind you having said that I never got bullied".

You just reminded me Hazmarcon - didn't they used to have 'Clog Fights? where they'd grab each other around the neck - and try to kick each others shins?
(Ouch!!)

(Where's the miners...)

doclatino,Just been down to your part of the country,we visited my neice in Lympstone her husband is in the Marines and we were invited to his passing out as a mountain leader at the marine training base in Lympstone.Went up to have a look at the shipwreck near Sidmouth the weather was great and its a very nice part of the country.I wore clogs at school and when the irons wore out my grandad used to put rubber irons on as they use to say, he would cut up an old bicycle tyre and nail strips to my clogs and he would say to me "thatle stop thi slorring" Had a few pints of otter bitter not a bad pint either.

I had some clog style sandals in the seventies. I remember going on the top deck of a bus with them on and losing my footing on about the fourth step down. They were dangerous things!

I had clogs when I was little but mostly I had shoes made by Malley's the shoemaker in Wallgate. They were a touch cheaper than the factory ones and much better quality cos they were made to fit your own feet exactly. I think he used Kidd for tiny feet and the leather got tougher as you grew. I loved the smell of the leather and sitting on the counter. When the shop closed I used to stand outside the shop and peep thru the cracks between the boards on the window - I could still see the counter. I could still smell the leather too. I cried when they pulled the shop down. Ah sad memories!

I believe they were first made for the Weavers in the cotton mills as they were so warm to wear and they had to stand at the loom on cold floors, I also have a very tiny pair with all the brass studs around and the irons on , a lot of people here have never sen them before and always causes conversation they were made in the market, the stall was run for the blind

I had a pair when I was little as I was 'pigeon-toed'! I think they were red and made by Walter Hurst in Hindley.

Glad to say I'm not pigeon-toed anymore so they must have helped.

(I can also remember going for physio exercises at an building somewhere near Wigan library? and walking along practising 'heel, toe' in a wooden floored hall with a wall mirror and ballet bar. Not in my clogs though.)
