Gas shillings

Started by: tom1303 (1602)

Just here perusing the site and a couple of memories came back.
Whenever I was sent to the shop as a young lad, I was allways told to ask if they had any gas shillings with my change. This stuck with me till decimalisation.
At the butchers Savoury Ducks, were pronounced Slavoury Ducks.
One Christmas I carried home the groceries in a box almost bigger than me, with Dr. Whites emblazened on the front.
Thanks Dad Happy memories.

I used to stand watching him counting them, thinking he might just say "Here lad get some toffee" but he never did.

A lot of homes had a small jar or brass jug to keep the Gas Shillings in on the Mantelpiece. Also had meters for the Leccy as well.

Just think about the poor old gasman walking around with all that weight.I think they used to have a supervisor at a collecting point on a [BSA Bantam] motorbike.

Molliem The way I heard it was "his face is longer than a gasman's mac"

We used to have a gas fridge, I think the Gas tv was always on the blink tho. Well, it was on Sundays when Songs of Praisey type programmes were on, Dad used to say the TV needed a rest.

Did you ever try running with two bobs worth of pennies in your short pants pockets, that was a lot of copper for a little un with no snake belt.

So sorry Jeremy. I've only just come back to this topic. No "as fow as a gasmon's mac" was because their macs were ugly and they favvered park flashers in 'em, plus they stunk o' gas as well!
