xrh59,
it does look like Mousolini!Which I expect fits the fascist face of Wigan council.I wouldn't be suprised if he was joined by Hitler and Stalin shortly!
This is the first I've heard of this ,so how was the voting carried out?
I can onlyassume that those who did vote forthis like ugly, or was it the best of a very bad bunch to pick from.
How can this be described as an amalgamation of all the inhabitants
of Wigan ,it leaves out 50% of the population -Women.
Come on we could all draw any face and say that it represented a whole town population and who could argue. It could also be used in any town any where in the country as there is nothing specific to Wigan at all about it.
The "artist" could con loads of daft councillors into buying this for their towns and make a fortune!

Having read JJ's post this morning, I've been to see 'The Face of Wigan' and must say, I love it. I can't fault the artist.

There was a lot of interest from people in the area. I heard a woman in her 30's excitedly exclaim, "Wow, look at that - it's cool!" and an older lady walk past with her husband to say, with a bit less enthusiasm, "It's a bl**dy waste of tax payers' money, if you ask me."

you may not be able to fault the artist but it is just a face ,any face from anywhere .What does it actually say about Wigan.

Personally, I don't think it needs to say anything about Wigan, Vera.
It's a piece of art and adds to/detracts from the town centre's environment by its own merit.

I find it interesting. Not sure how it links to our area but it's something to talk about.

It's not council money though, I understand that Modus have paid for it.

The face of Wigan should be a coal miner/mill girl.
That carbuncle is not a Wigan face no matter how you look at it.

It didn't cost the rate payers anything,
only a few acres of the town center

Replied: 11th Dec 2008 at 20:19

Posted by: danni (inactive)

it has been placed on a concrete plinth in the middle of the play circle which was made for the children who use the Wiend Centre, ergo no more play circle

Dead right coccium, think they call it "Planning Gain" sounds better than "fiddle"
I suppose it's a bit more imaginative than a Rugby ball on a stick to commemorate Central Park, that must have taken some effort to think up.

This is not a permanent fixture - it's to be moved around to several locations within Wigan Borough - so the kids maze will remain.

I took loads of photos of it being installed by crane on Wednesday night. Look out for it on the Photo-a-day apge soon.

Oy correct me if Im wrong but the plinth was built on site? It had shuttering around it to keep it in place after the concrete had been poured !

Replied: 11th Dec 2008 at 21:32

Yes Danni it was built on site. It was already in place when I got there on Wednesday.

I'm not sure Danni - maybe it was laid on some sort of protective base?

To be honest the play circle is in a pretty poor condition to start with.

I'll make some enquiries.

Couldnt agree more Xrh. I work in Colchester a fair bit and the lights there are fanstastic and well appreciated. Maybe they will make the statues eyes light up! Only lights they are interested in putting up in Wigan go red, amber, green!

sorry folks I like it.. It reflects the hard working man of Wigan. Square jawed, rugged features, a face that has seen the hard times as well as good. the brick shapes that make up the face are remanisant of the old terraced houses that once littered our proud town. Features that have tasted the mud on Central Park, and gloried in the triumph of the Wembley trophy. A face that tells of toiling in the mines, iron works and cotton mills. A face with a story to tell... Got me "arty" head on can you tell..lol

I'm v impressed by it - I've told my Mum to look near the Wiend the next time she's in Wigan - but haven't told her what the sculpture is. It was magic seeing people come upon it without expecting it when I was there yesterday.

Waft and Weave - I like that too.

No problem jo anne. I saw it on some history programme, left to right - weft to wight.

Getting back to the face, and google. It reminds me of that optical ilusion of a type of mask which rotates. At first it looks like a positive image, like the sculpture, but is actually reversed, like a mould of a face. (or vise versa) Not found it though.

On the new Frankie Boyle video he says his mate packed in drinking cos he could not stand waking up in the morning and seeing all the money he had spent and not knowing how he spent it. Frankie reckons it is worse if you wake up and cannot remember but realise you have more money than what you went out with!

In all honesty do we really need shed loads of moronic statues all over the town, after all its us who is paying for it and 95% of us dont even want em here.
