rio caroni,
No !

dostaf,

Not a dog man, so don't know about that !
P.S. Hope the cream works

cheers aspuller, mmmm, my inkling is going down a little and it aint the cream.

I thought I had it and could have even thrown in another longest? All but one being transport together with another being a recreational place. I'm pretty sure you'd know of the dogs I had in mind. But with you not being a dog man I'm still not sure if I'm barking up the wrong tree.

dostaf,
I would say 3 are connected with transport,1 not. Your probably not far from the answer.

Cheers aspuller. In relative terms I'm sitting not too far from Hoscar sewage works and athough it probably stinks to high heaven, and with no shortage of deep deep doo doo I don't think it's that.

I know dostaf won't sleep tonight if he can't get the answer so here it is........

They are all in Yorkshire.

Dent station,(Settle to Carlisle line)is the highest mainline station in England

Hard Force waterfall is the highest single drop in England.

The B6138 road from Mytholmroyd to Blackstone Edge is the longest uphill gradient stretching over 5 miles.

Deepest canal lock in England is the Tuel Lane lock at Sowerby Bridge in West Yorks.

Im guessing that has some connection with motor bikes? if its in Yorks. then you be close.

Naughty aspuller, my inkling was Yorkshire,
my first thought was standedge tunnel (canal) the highest, longest and deepest in England. That's why I asked about transport. Longest suspension bridge-- the Humber, the highest pub--Tan Hill Inn.

Ast never heard about those little dogs they have in Yorkshire?

Aspuller, No, Branham Park, near Wetherby, is where the 'Leeds Festival' is taking place at the moment.
I went there yesterday, along the M62 / M1, past the 'highest motorway point in England' and Scammonden Dam the 'highest reservoir in England' (?)(deepest ?). Not far from the 'longest, deepest and highest canal tunnel in England', Standedge. So I would have said West Yorkshire, but you meant different things to what I was thinking!

By the way, speaking of motorbikes, there used to be a hill-climb at Scammonden Dam and at Baitings Dam on the old Rochdale Road. (brings back memories)

PS ... JJ, Rose Bridge colliery was only about half as deep as the deepest colliery in England!

The tv prog last year which featured that section of the 62 was most informative. It also dispelled "the little house on the prarie" myth about the farmer holding out for more money, and them having to split the motorway around it.

john joseph,

Now that you have had time to, lets say "think about it",I must concede that you were technically not wrong !!

P.S. I know exactly where you mean, but where did you get the name "Rocky Mountain" for the slag heap at New Springs?

john joseph,
the "hill" is covered by trees now,an improvement I think, its official name Woodshaw Rook, but better known by a corruption of that name...Wutchy rook. Well, to Aspullers anyway.

Phew, I'm glad I've got here before anyone spotted my deliberate mistake. I thought I was going to have to quote G. Mainwaring and say "I wondered who'd be the first one to spot it"

Over to you aspuller.

But in my defence I'll say this:-
Which end has the toll booths.

dostaf ... I spotted it! Do I get a sixpence for being first to spot Blackpool Tower off the M6?

Aspuller ... It looks like there's more to Yorkshire than meets the eye! They've got loads of longests, highests, etc. that we didn't know about.

Cheers folks. As a Lancastrian I feel tarnished for giving the tykes credit they don't deserve. Would a tyke give us credit? By god I'd have given a whole five pound note to be a fly on the wall when they were deciding where to put the toll booths.

On that note. tonker, when you've washed your fingers after typing praise for the place over the hills. I'll give you a shiny fifty pence piece for spotting the tower from the M6. (Have you got the appropriate doucumentation from the North-bound traffic cops?

Ten pence for doing it on the 55 (oo errr missus) is a sign of my generosity. But from the M6.

Far from it. Tongue, or tung, was firmly in cheek aspuller.
I didn't remember those places mentioned above out of spite. Envy maybe.

Edit 15.10

Hope they're not greasing the Halifax gibbet ready for my next visit.
Wonder if they use dripping for that as well as their chips.
