That has been on the cards for years now ....

And I have been told, that Wigan Council has bought the lease off Morrisons for the former Wigan Store, I bet they are glad to get shut of that money pit in The Galleries.

Anything within a 15 mile radius is classed as Wigan, according to this paper.

They don't get a lot of custom up there for the size of the store. Never seen it full when I go not even at holiday times.

If you think about it, this has been inevitable for a long time now, and the problem has I see it, is that it opened in circa 1982 and in those days I don't think there were any supermarkets in Hingley or Platt Wazz, there was a Kwik Save in Lower Ince, which was scruffy, there was Morrisons in Wigan Town Centre in the old Whelans store, and Asda at Newtown, Tesco in King Street closed in 1977 so the Ince Morrisons had no competition, or very little, so what about now .....

Lidl (Darlington Street)
Tesco (Hingley)
Aldi (Hingley)
Asda (Hingley)
Iceland (Platt Wazz)
Co-Op (Platt Wazz)

McColls (Hingley)
McColls (Lower Ince)
McColls (Hingley Green)

Spar (Hingley) was there before Morrisons, but has been expanded with a new store

Thats off top of me bonce, there are probably more, now has I remember at Amberswood where the Morrisons Store is located, in the early 1980s a big hospital was supposed to have been built there, which would have replaced Wigan, Leigh, Billinge, Whelley, Astley, Atherleigh, Firs Maternity Home Hospitals, so that might have been why they decided to build that store in Higher Ince, where there would have been passing trade from the big hospital, but it didn't get built because Wigan Council ballsed up the application for it to the government

We always use this store but the road from Hindley to Wigan has become a nightmare.

I don't know how much official notice they gave the Wigan store staff when that closed, but they told the staff the news on Monday the 4th January 2016 immediately after the Crimble & New Year period, and it closed almost exactly three months later on the 2nd April 2016

I doubt it

When the Wigan one closed there were some positions going at the Ince store, but they made the Wigan store staff officially redundant, and then they had to apply for the Ince positions the same has anyone else.

A few did get taken on at Ince, but the majority were made redundant, but they managed to find new jobs fairly quickly in other supermarkets around Wigan, but after 12 months there were still some who had not got another job, inclooding a lady who had worked at the original Whelans store in Wigan, which became Morrisons, and that included working at the temporary store in Station Road, on the old Casino site, whilst they built The Galleries store.......

Yoo are best using Lidl and Aldi for basics like washing up liquid, washing powder, bog rolls etc and Morrisons, Asda etc for something a bit more fancy
