www.timepix.uk has a fascinating collection of old photographs & it’s growing!

We mapped 766 new (old 1950s) photos of Wigan this month, finding shops, houses, railways, industrial works, canals and a number of local residents getting themselves into the photos. Curious children, some of them very tiny, were out and about on the streets and of course many of those old terraced houses have since been demolished. The photos are searchable by surname, street name and keyword. Jo anne, These are amazing! A revelation. Professional quality pics of my old haunts. Just done a few now and then comparisons on Google Street View, and it stirs the soul....the passage of time. Wow!

Jo anne: These are unbelievable.

One of the photo's show mi Mum and Dad's house being built - the place where I was born.

Others show Highfield with NO housing estates...Bliss.

Thank you.

I like your review, Tommy Two Stroke.

The site’s well worth a revisit if you’ve not looked for a while - lots more photos added.

Yes , Wigan like most Northern Industrial Towns were not "pretty" but they provided jobs which at the time were welcome . It relieved poverty. But all it was doing was making the rich so called aristocracy richer. I cannot understand how this exists in a modern Britain . Lord this , Lady That. Duke of Nothing.Traipsing around like they are superior to everyone else Get rid of the bludgers

I went through the Lower Ince section not recognising much as most appeared to be on railway lines. However a few pics were recognisable, until, until I got to no, 694/5 and then.....up came a picture of houses corner of Westwood lane Mountview. So recognisable even the plate on one house denoting piano lessons (the lettering not obvious to everyone) this was where my husband grew up.

Sorry, Aussie94, I hadn’t noticed the initial link is now defunct.

Exploring the site’s photo maps is a good way to locate local photos:
