At this time of year around about the longest day of th year on the 21st June, when you look from Wigan towards Winter Hill, the sun sets over Winter Hill to the left of the TV mast and it rises to the right of the TV mast and if there are no clouds, you can see a glow all night behind the mast, because the sun has only just dipped below the horizon

The top of Boyswell House would be a cracker, if you could get up there.

The sun will rise to the left of Winter Hill as you look ENE
It will set somewhere to the right of Ormskirk Parish Church as you look WNW.
(On 21/6/18)

"You can see a glow all night behind the mast, because" - the mast is full of red aircraft warning lights!

Yoo are all wrong, as it gets closer to the summer solstice, midsummer's day, 21st of June, if you look over to Winter Hill from lets say top of Windy Arbour, you will see the sun set to the left of the mast and the glow will track behind the mast for the rest of the night, until it pops up at dawn to the right of the mast

On midsummers day, in June, in Wigan, the Sun is at it's highest at mid-day. 12 hours later, it's at it's highest at Wigan's antipodal point, which is approximately 300 miles off the south - east coast of New Zealand, in the Southern Ocean, not far off Antarctica, on t'other side o't'World from Winter Hill !
That, Tommy 2 Stroke, explains why you can't see the Sun, from Wigan, shining behind Winter Hill during the night!
Winter Hill is North North East of Wigan and the Sun sets in the West so, in your favour, the Sun does actually set 'left' of Winter Hill mast, but it's a bloody long way to the west!

...Like I explained earlier.

The earth turns on it's axis and at this time of the year, the axis is getting to it's maximum tilt towards the sun and that is why the sun only just sets below the horizon and the further North you go the lighter the sky is at night, hence in Scandinavian countries, yoo have the land of the midnight sun
Yoo need to be astronomically minded like me

Look away from Winter Hill on 21/6/18...towards the NW...Maybe around Pendle Hill.

I agree basil, except look behind Winter Hill and to the left and draw a line from Wigan through Winter Hill to Pendle Hill and they line up perfectly
