Basil

Started by: priscus (inactive)

I like to cook Italian, so get through a lot of basil.

Not a problem at this time of year, as have it growing both in garden, and indoors in a pot.

However for most of the year, have to buy in basil. Usually get one of the pots of growing basil from the supermarket. They are very pot-bound, but even if I re-pot, still only get one shot. ie Does not survive to furnish a further cooking session (Unless within a couple of days)

Supermarket has it throughout the year, it could be imported, but I suspect is grown in UK in a controlled environment.

Anyway, found some cheap grow lights on fleabay, so thowt I might take a cutting, and see if I can grow basil in UK out of season.

If it works in cannabis farms, then presumably I can have culinary herbs out of season.

Be pleased to hear if any of you have experience growing out of season crops.

The supermarket Basil plants don't last very long do they, even though quite tasty Basil leaves are actually very good for you with having anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory oils, the seeds have health giving properties too.

Basil Seeds

The UK growers of herbs have those special poly-tunnels to grow throughout the year.

If the neighbours see you carrying in growing medium, rolls of foil and polythene along with lights, and later smelling an aroma they'll be giving the drug squad a nod and a wink.
