SUMMER.....

Started by: admin (1643)

Have the younger people's perception of what 'summer' is changed? Heard the weather forecaster on Country File yesterday say "THE RETURN OF SUMMER" RETURN!!! as far as I am concerned it hasn't been. A few nice days here and there and people say it's been a Good Summer. Back in the 1950's and 60's when I was growing up, Summer weather i.e. sunny days lasted for weeks with just an occasional rainy day. It would appear that these days what the younger generation perceive as 'summer', is just the odd couple of days of sunny weather, along with rainy days.
Another thing that annoys me is when the weather forecasters say "It's going to be really hot today, but in the north its windy and rain..." They talk as if LONDON and the south is THE U.K. and up north we are just an afterthought.

I seem to remember our summers being long and hot too. We were never indoors when it was school holidays.

As for London and the south, we have never exsisted, especially when it comes too finances.

Summers appear to be getting worse each year, this one is maybe the worst so far,I am still waiting for Global Warming to reach us.

Pundits did say that global warming effects on UK would be warmer milder Winters, but Summers that were wetter, and overall cooler, but with isolated very hot spells. A change that is particularly worrying for British agriculture, since it favours blight, and is not conducive to crops being dry at harvest time.

Do you remember 1979 (I think, but could have been 1980), when it snowed (Heavily) in June?

I don't believe in global warming.I do believe it's a natural thing,we didn't cause the ice age or the sea to cover the whole of Great Britain, plus a lot more natural disasters.

Memories and rose coloured spectacles. It's probably best to trawl through records, will take much time and doing. All I remember about August '62 it poured down on my wedding day.

TTS, Yes 76 good, and long.

The hot days we had this year, were also extremely humid so not pleasant like the 76 heatwave: very draining to work in such humid air.

We have been on a heat warning for the last couple of weeks. It appears it could be one of the hottest/ the hottest summers on record. Already had 10 days over 30c. Because we are at altitude our humidity levels are low so no sweaty days or nights.

The highlight of Summer was the tar melting in the street. We made dozens of tar balls which we fired at the unsuspecting

It always seemed to be warm at walking day because the tar would be soft and mark your new sandals!!

I did not see any melting tar on the days recently, when record high temperatures were attained.

Perhaps these days, they are using a different formulation for road surfacing.

A childhood delight. On a hot day sat in the gutter popping tar bubbles then going home to have butter rubbed on fingers to remove tar. Did it really work?
