What was the name of that Sports shop across the corner from Crofters on Market Street that had an upstairs bit and Bryan Robson was there in about 1985?

JJB's ???

JJB had the shop there that started the empire. his daughter was a year below me at school and always had the best PE kit.

Remember the shop can't for the life of me think of the name, it was an independant shop owned by a guy who was a keen runner. Geoff Capes also made an appearance there around the same time.

Was once a toy shop, I think.

Currently Singers Army Stores.

Can't for the life of me remember it being a sports shop

Posted by: dostaf (50020) Report abuse
Ooops.

I remember seeing the 'sale' signs too.
.
Edit

not that it answers the question. but wasn't it called 'Prams And Toys' at one time? Or am I thinking of Howards (Mesnes Street).

JJB's was opposite the market square, near Smiths Tours.

JJB was opposite corner to BHS, behind what is/was the Tavern, no? It's a textile shop or something most recently.

Posted by: ŠartŠ (5735) Report abuse
Would you say that this is opposite to BHS?
Lower down on the same side of Market St, was the Pacific Ocean restaurant, & O&G Rushtons warehouse, Gas Showroom,Pendleburys temp home after the fire , later politburo for WMBC is in plain view..

I didn't know where Smiths Tours was, and I'm not as old as you.

The shop he's talking of is back up the road.

Nice pic though... what year was this?

art,
As you say JJB Sports was at the bottom of Market Street. I think there was a Gents Outfitters on the Corner of Market Street at the bottom where you turned left heading towards the Guardians etc.

Batty's (Now Oxfam)

Here's another view, next door to Eric Thursbys & Battyes Corner.

Posted by: jamse (2552) Report abuse
I don't remember that.
Great photo.
So the massive screen of glass buildings that are in the top of the photo were demolished leaving only the left hand side.

I went to the Tec for years and had no idea that it had been like this at first.

Why did the take the other bit down?

Posted by: dostaf (50020) Report abuse
Not demolished, Jamse.

More like extended.

Think of an L shape with a bit of the concourse remaining as a courtyard.

Here

In fact, just above the man in the high-viz jacket, there was an open area on the ground floor. (Entrance tunnel, type thing, some open area remains as main entrance) Later turned into classrooms with mirrored glass.

Posted by: jamse (2552) Report abuse
Ah... Yes I can see the L-shape was filled in.
Excellent, thanks.

The older version looks much more impressive to me. Even in this day and age.

Belting pic, by the way.

The first phase was the Thomas Linacre college building.

The second phase (on the corner opposite Battyes) was the John McCurdy Hall
