Damper Or Dampener?

Started by: dostaf (inactive)

Often misquoted.

Also serves as a reminder of this year's Operation Treacle.

“We don’t want to put a dampener on people having fun but we are cracking down on offending behaviour.”

Operation Treacle

I wouldn't have been certain whether it was damper or dampener, Dostaf.

Damper:

1. One that deadens, restrains, or depresses: Rain put a damper on our picnic plans.

I thought dampener would make sense, too, as in 'raining on someone's parade' or ' on someone's bonfire'.

Google helped me with my pedantry, Jo Anne.

I mentally questioned it a while back. I'd have gone for the dampen, as in wet, option too.

Special brew needs damping.

Similar phrase any IAHHM fans will be familiar with is:

"I'll settle his ash!"

I didn't know who it was, Ayrefield.

"Emergency services are pulling out all the stops to ensure the Halloween and Bonfire Night celebrations are not blighted by rocketing levels of anti-social behaviour.

Operation Treacle ... will once again run over the next few weeks to raise awareness of the consequences of causing trouble.

... the campaign aims to crack down on a range of anti-social and criminal activities, from throwing fireworks to knocking on the doors of vulnerable people while trick or treating to making hoax calls.

Operation Treacle has led to significant reductions in bonfire-related nuisance behaviour in Wigan over the past five years.

The campaign is also supported by www.safe4autumn.com, a website encouraging young people to get involved in positive activities and attend organised firework displays.

Organisations across Wigan, including the council, WLCT and the Nowt2Do project based in Tyldesley will put on a range of activities for young people, many of them free.

For more information visit www.wigan.gov.uk/safe4autumn and on the Linc Website

We've had a few eggs thrown at our house recently. The youngsters seemed to be having a cracking time - we just hope the same won't be said of our windows.

I'm going to be contradictory in terms and mention the fact that 'Mischief Night' didn't get a mention.

One of my annual bugbears.

We don't have it, so don't promote it.

settle someone's hash

informal deal with someone in a forceful and decisive manner: the coal merchant tried to foist boiler-nuts on us but I soon settled his hash

Here

I bet that dampened his spirits. Foisting his boiler-nuts on people; the very idea.
