Winnie on Thursday 25th October the Kindle Fire HD is released and you can read books ,watch movies and browse the internet ,listen and store your music and much more.

It costs £159 and can do most of what an Ipad can do at a fraction of the price.

Its on my wishlist.

Kindle Fire HD

Does it teach good manners and civility?

Will the Kindle allow a SIM Card for internet anywhere?

Winnie

From today's Sunday Times.

Not sure Tom.

A Kindle would be ideal so as not to be clogging up bookshelves with books, especially given the thickness and updates. Shame they're so bloody expensive (the books, not the Kindle).

Posted by: gaffer (3863)   Report abuse
Kindle downloads are subject to VAT unlike the print version which is zero rated.

Posted by: townofmemories (16547)  Report abuse
They're still expensive, even though they're cheaper than physical books, VAT or not.

Before you make a decision check if your local library intends having an e-book service in the near future. I have a Kobo because they are library compatible and I get all my books free (subject to paying my annual subscription of $12.00 - around 8 pounds)

TOM... there are ways and means my friend.

Posted by: kathpressey (1758)  Report abuse
i love my ereader [sony]. it's much easier to read in bed and if you get stuck without a good book you can download a new one instantly- no waiting for the library to open. i love real books too but i'd recommend going digital

Caddy, do they include Blackstone's Statutes etc?

You can use a Kindle in most places around the world if you buy the wifi & 3G versions....

I'm checking my e mails in Phuket from Kindle.... All free with built in 3G.... Tempted to upgrade to the Kindle Fire

I can't be bothered, so phu...

Posted by: Staffie (909) Report abuse
Lots of free books on Kindle.

Posted by: cherries (151)  Report abuse
darren.......check the Kindle Fire because I don't think it's got 3G. It's got all sorts of 'bells and whistles' but I don't think it's got 3G which is sooooo handy !!
The Kindle paperwhite at £169 has 3G but not the cheaper one so I would check if I was you before you go in feet first.
I have the Kindle Touch 3G which is smashing and thought of having the Kindle Fire but am not so sure now.....I like having my 3G when I'm not at home.

Out on Thursday

Kindle Fire HD

Posted by: cherries (151)  Report abuse
Bennie.......where does it say that it's got 3G ??? You can't download away from home without a WiFi connection if the Kindle Fire hasn't got 3G

Posted by: darren (7046)   Report abuse
Shame if its not got 3G....

Posted by: nicko (3617)  Report abuse
ive got one its on 3g and havent paid for a book yet

Posted by: cherries (151)  Report abuse
nicko.......first of all where have you managed to get a Kindle Fire cos it isn't out till Thursday and second, how have you managed to get one with 3G because the Kindle Fire I'm pretty sure doesn't have 3G.
One of the Kindle paperwhites has 3G but they're not the same as the Kindle Fire.
The Kindle Touch has 3G but that's been out for a while now.....I've got one.

Seems a backward step if you newest innovation has no 3G!!! We will find out tomorrow.

MiFi is the way to go, apparently.

Posted by: townofmemories (16547)  Report abuse
Does MiFi rhyme with Smiffy, in the pronounciation?

Posted by: Mac (27856)  Report abuse
Nah, wifi. But is just as useful when sat on a bus.

Posted by: townofmemories (16547)  Report abuse
So not miffy then?

Cherries

Kindle Fire HD was released a few weeks ago in the USA and I think Nicko lives there.

Posted by: cherries (151)  Report abuse
Hi bennie
That explains why nicko was able to get the Kindle Fire HD before its release here but the one which is being released here tomorrow does not have 3G. It would be too expensive to have that as well as all the other technology that's on there. Whether the one in the USA does have 3G I don't know.
I believe that there may be another Kindle being released sometime which does have 3G but not this one being released here.

Posted by: bennielechat (inactive) Report abuse
What exactly does 3G enable you to do Cherries?

Posted by: walshy76 (inactive) Report abuse
i think its still good value

Posted by: cherries (151)  Report abuse
Hi bennie
Having 3G on your Kindle allows you to download stuff without the need for a computer. If I'm out and about anywhere I can download a book just as it is. On my previous Kindle without 3G I either had to be at my PC or find somewhere where there was WiFi to download so the Kindle Touch with 3G is sooooo handy.
The Kindle Fire HD sounds great but doesn't have 3G and that sort of puts me off. At first I just presumed that it would have seeing that it has all the other stuff on it but it's not......it would make it too expensive apparently.
I've heard that the USA are bringing a Kindle 4G out so we should be able to download on that but must admit I don't know much about that. nicko probably knows more about that than I do.
This sounds as if I'm really technical, doesn't it and I'm not !!! Just know that with 3G you can download anywhere.
I agree with walshy that the Kindle Fire HD is good value for all the stuff it's got on. Just a shame there's no 3G but I'm sure it'll happen !!!!

Posted by: bennielechat (inactive) Report abuse
Thanks Cherries I wasn't familiar with 3G, it would be handy to be connected anywhere but even on holiday most cafes and tavernas have wi-fi you can get on line to download from.

It would be handy but I think I can live without it. I like the fact that the Kindle Fire HD has very good speakers as I will use it for playing music and watching movie on hols .

The kindle seemed to be getting a bit of grief on watchdog earlier with some of the devices not lasting a year.

Posted by: nicko (3617)  Report abuse
no bennie/cherries i live in oz and it definitly says 3g on the screen when I download, i did not say what model it was cos i dont know or care got it in august and it plays music and audio,no video but ive got an iphone for that

They were discussing Kindles on Watchdog last night, people having a lot of problems with them.

Posted by: kenee (1495) Report abuse

After the Watchdog report the price of Kindles should plummet.

The kindle fire advert in Tesco mentions WiFi, but not 3G

The Kindle Paperwhite & Keyboard version have 3G but they do not stream movies.

The Kindle Fire doesn't have 3G but has lots of other things.
I have the Kindle Touch 3G because all I really want to do is read.....it does have some of the newspapers on as well. I don't have to search for places with WiFi when I'm away or out and about cos the 3G does that for you and downloads anywhere. I'm not bothered about watching movies, etc. so this suits me perfectly. It's great not having to search for WiFi hotspots when you're out.
The Kindle Paperwhite I believe won't be available over here until about December and you can get a 3G version of that.
A little write-up about the Kindle Touch 3G........

Easiest to Use, Free 3G Wireless for downloading books anytime, anywhere
Kindle Touch 3G is our easiest-to-use, most-convenient Kindle because there is no wireless setup--you are ready to shop, download, and read right out of the box. Kindle Touch 3G uses the same wireless signals as mobile phones, so you don't need to worry about Wi-Fi connections, passwords or internet charges. Unlike mobile phones, with Kindle Touch 3G there are no monthly fees or commitments — Amazon pays for Kindle Touch 3G's wireless connectivity.

It really depends what you want the Kindle for I suppose. If you want all the 'bells and whistles' but aren't bothered about the ease of downloading, then it's the Kindle Fire or one of the original Kindles for you but if you want to read and not be bothered about finding WiFi hotspots then the Touch 3G is superb.
