HOT SPRINGS?

Started by: priscus (inactive)

I was told, in my childhood, that Wigan once had Hot Springs??

Anyone able to shed any light upon this?

(workings at Parsonage encountered high temperature strata!)

Not sure about them being hot. But there's stuff out there about the springs in Wigan. Harrogate Street was originally New Harrogate Street, The springs eventually became poluted.

Can't remember them being reported as hot though.

There is now a very elegant building erected for the use of those who resort to this spring, with convenience for drinking the water and for using it either as a hot or cold bath."

Here

Presumably the cold water was heated, but not geothermally in this instance.

I once read an article in Past Forward that mentioned hot springs in the area where Lidl is now... near the courts. They also inferred if my memory is not fooling me that the Silverwell pub on Darlington Street took its name from them.

I will see if I can find the article.

There is also an article which mentions the pollution due to mine working, but I'm having no luck finding it.

I found one article...

The Burning Wells of Wigan

You will need Adobe Reader, and the article is on page 29.

Edit: Here is the article I was talking about, it ties in with Dustaf's post...

But I don't think this is the answer Pricus is looking for, Blackstaff.

Just been wondering if there are any hot springs in the UK. eg Bath, Buxton etc.

The notion that Wigan had hot springs could stem from these burning wells and hot strata due to mining.

Quite possibly.

Also, underground coal fires, which sometimes burned for years, could have temporarily have heated spring waters. but I thought I'd seize this excellent opportunity to see if anyone had any inkling of the existence of the genuine article.

I wonder if Wigan Spa water tasted as unpleasant as the Harrogate water?

No wonder Betty's is so successful you need a super-strong coffee to drive that taste from your toungue.
