Armed Forces Day at Leigh Sports Village.

Started by: irene (2901)

What a brilliant day.....so glad the weather stayed hot and sunny; such a shame when so much organisation is spoiled by bad weather. But where were YOU, Our Joseph?! Only Peter and I turned up in 1940s dress, but we had such lovely comments from people we were glad we'd dressed up, although we felt a couple of prunes to begin with! Were any of you Wigan World lot there? If so, hope you enjoyed it as much as we did! Irene. x.

Did you have a dead fox over your shoulder Irene?

And a straw basket?

Irene was you wearing a fox fur? I saw a chap wearing braces too. Sorry I couldn't contact you as I was busy with the father in law who was taken ill by the heat and took him home early, we didn't see as much as of the Sports Village as we wanted but these things can't be helped.Glad you enjoyed the day our Irene.

Indeed.

I didn't opt for the £25.00 Spitfire experience though.

And I managed not to shout "Don't tell him your name Pike", at the end of a re-enactment scene.

Unfortunately I didn't see much of the re-enactment, saw the Spitfire though. What I did see of the Sports Village I liked, so good on Leigh.

That was me, lads, and it was a mink. Let me reassure you that I ADORE animals, and the fur I had came out of the prop box at Wigan Little Theatre and is donkey's years old, from the days when it was accepted to wear real fur and people didn't stop to think what they were doing.Leaving it in the wardrobe sadly won't bring it back to life or I would do so. I apologise if I caused offence.Wish I'd known who you were, Dustaf; I always enjoy an exchange with you, and I hope your father-in-law is recovered, Joseph.

Yes he's fine now Irene, I had my doubts about him walking in the heat but he did insist. No need to apologies for your mink, it looked well looked after.

I saw the Spitfire running, but couldn't see the sign for the crowd that were gathered. It was only later that I saw that it was £25.00 a pop to sit in the cockpit with the engine running.

One of the advantages the venue had over last year's Mesnes Park event was the indoor facilities. Though I was surprised at the amount of security staff present.

Hope a good time was had by all who went.

And more importantly, I hope these events show our servicemen and women that whatever our political opinions some of us are behind them.

Sorry Irene, I meant no harm with the dead fox comment.

I actually saw a woman in 40's gear (you) as I arrived. I almost asked if you were the lady off WW, but thought, "hang on, there may be loads more of 'em inside"

Obviously there weren't.

I was in Chester, Irene, We visited the graves in the Army quarter, then paid our respects to the fallen in the RAF there.
Leigh sounded fantastic, a HUGE well done to all concerned!

The news is spread far and wide
Another comrade has sadly died
A sunset vigil upon the sand
As a soldier leaves this foreign land

We stand alone, and yet as one
In the fading light of a setting sun
We've all gathered to say goodbye
To our fallen comrade who's set to fly

The eulogy's read about their life
Sometimes with words from pals or wife
We all know when the CO's done
What kind of soldier they'd become

The padre then calls us all to pray
The bugler has Last Post to play
The cannon roars and belches flame
We will recall, with pride, their name

A minute's silence stood in place
As tears roll down the hardest face
Deafening silence fills the air
With each of us in personal prayer

Reveille sounds and the parade is done
The hero remembered, forgotten by none
They leave to start the journey back
In a coffin draped in the Union Jack

Do you mean the free bus, Danni? No, we went in the car but I thought the free bus was a brilliant idea, and seemed to prove popular.

Why all this sudden interest in our armed forces?

Until all the deaths and injuries in Afghanistan, many never cared a monkey's about them or even remenberence day!

why the surprise about the good weather in Leigh, surely you know that the sun always shines on the good and righteous people of Leigh,I was there also with my Father-in-law who is now 90 and fought in the war with the R.A.F.he enjoyed it immensley so much in fact that he gave me £20 to take his Daughter Kathleen (Mrs Pewapp) out for lunch but as I am going again to the sports village today to watch Leigh beat Keighley I shall spend most of the twenty notes on alchoholic beverages on myself before the match.

GW an accurate assessment of Gricers posts.

His Victor Meldrew attitude is very tiring. He is a bitter mon.

A lot of people on here have served in the forces but because he 'claims' to have served himself he see it as his right to run down England at every opportunity.

The Gwim Weaper, jay1 and Nicko

Like I have said before, I have not only done my bit for Queen and Country and done remeberence day parades. Have you?

I was only making a point that prior to Afghanistan many people did not give a hoot about our brave armed forces and the attendances at rememberence day parades were declining, but of course you would not now that, seeing that you proberly have never done what I have done, yourselves.

It may interest you to know that a short time ago, I was at the Menin Gate at Ypres in Belgium paying homage to the lads who lost their lives in the first world war and I also make regiular donations to the British Legion and have contributed to the 'Help our Hero's campaign'.

So before you take cheap swipes at myself, try doing what I have done!

Yes, I have....I also support our troops and applaud everyone who support armed forces day, (And every other day), for showing the lads and lasses that they are being thought of, supported and being backed by the majority of the Nation at a time they are most needed. The troops on FOP haven't a clue whether they will come home in with limbs missing, or at all. (Last Tuesday I watched my Nephew given a full military funeral for dying for his Country).
Peoples sons, siblings, Fathers are dying and all you can do is find fault You would sooner complain. That shows the calibre of man? you really are.
Am I supposed to get down on my knees and give thanks that you visited ypres?...I visit military graves regulary, I am a member of the British Legion riders branch. I will leave it to you to find out what that entails.

God bless the Armed forces.

Oh, and by the way, even if people have only just decided to support the Armed Forces, their good wishes will be as appreciated as anyone elses.
Even the hundreds of thousands of people who go to Churches and parades every Remembrance Sunday, and the millions annually who wear their poppys with pride.

This thread was started to tell people what a lovely day Irene had at the event, people concurred until you spoiled it. Please feel free to start your own thread about how you feel, and what a shower everyone bar you is.

The Gwim Weaper

In your case, I will apologise, but as I have said before, I was only trying to make a point about some people only now showing any interest in our armed forces as a result of the media mentioning about Afghanistan on the news.

Supporting the armed forces should be all the time, and not just when it suits the media to mention them.

Prehaps, I did not put it across very well.

Sorry, to hear about your nephew.

'It may interest you to know that a short time ago, I was at the Menin Gate at Ypres in Belgium paying homage to the lads who lost their lives in the first world war'

This is Ruddy/Gricer standard line when challenged for running down England and its people. In his muddled head he seems to think it makes his opinion more valid than anyone elses.

The more i hear from him,the less i like him.
