How did they tie the strap on in the first place?

They would have put it on when they came across it, at one time all these swing bridges had chains on them that where connected to the bridge and the canal bank and hung down into the water that you could pull

Appley Bridge Joanne, there are two still used by the farmers which when not in use must be left open to canal boaters, and one more which was replaced with a new metal one a few years ago, which is for pedestrians and is left open, so boaters must stop and open it then close it again when they have sailed past

Thanks, Mick, I’ve seen the metal one for pedestrians, but not seen the other two in use. A great little video.
