APPLETON, Ann (maiden name unk) - 1832

Notes / message: Looking for the Cawley/Appleton/Reid family in Wigan, Gidlow Lane.

Joseph Appleton was born in Orrell about 1824. He was a nailmaker and may have also been a preacher at the Methodist church. I'm not sure when he moved from Orrell to Wigan. He married Ann (last name unknown), born about 1832, who may have been from Ireland. Together they raised Anna "Annie" Reid, born about 1855, who was Ann's daughter from a previous marriage. Joseph and Ann also had at least three children together: Mary Alice, born in Wigan about 1861; Joseph Jr., born in Wigan about 1863; and James, born in Wigan about 1865.

Mary Alice married Patrick Cawley, born about 1857 in Ireland, on October 20, 1883, at St John RC Church. I believe he came to Wigan about 1871. He worked for Margaret and Matthew Thorpe. They had three children in Wigan: Mary Ann Cawley, born Sept 11, 1884; Joseph Patrick, born Oct 8, 1886; and John Gerald "Jack", born Oct 20, 1888.

The Cawley family emigrated to New York in 1887 (Patrick) and 1889 (Mary and kids). They had several more children in the US.
