723 Sqn ATC cadets and staff in front of Lancaster bomber. Taken about 1980,not sure of base, possibly RAF Scampton, Lincolnshire. I'm sure ET will tell me the details.

Back row 2nd left is Harry Rigby, a civilian instructor and an old work colleague of mine from BT. 5th left is Eddie Kay who went on to command the Squadron. Two of Harry's sons were cadets and are back row 4th right and 2nd right on front row.

The base is RAF Coningsby,1980, the home of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and the Lanc' is PA474, one of only two left that are in flying condition, the other is in Canada. The Officer on right was Flt.Lt.Roy Pickstock, C.O. At Wigan ATC for a few years but sadley no longer with us. E.T.

This Lanc'is the City of Lincoln, Bernard, but at present it is flying under new codes and lettering and is named,"The Phantom of the Ruhr." The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight change their aircraft markings occaisionaly to try and represent some of the actual operational planes of WW2. E.T.

Two Hawkins brothers also appear in the photo - Andy and his younger brother Phil.

Hi Andy, It's a long time since we went to RAF Akrotiri, Cyprus. What are you doing now? One of the RAFVR officers who reformed Wigan ATC in 1967 has just been in touch from Australia.

Comment by: Eric Turner on 18th August 2009 at 15:47

Harry Rigby had 3 sons, all in the cadets at one time. Standing, right, is Fl.Lt.Roy Pickstock then Paul Heyes, Peter Hull,?Rigby,Hawkins, and Eddie Kay, Eddie is now a Wing Staff Officer with the rank of Squadron Leader.

Eric
I'm an air traffic controller on Heathrow Approach Radar Suites operating out of the London Area Terminal & Control Centre at Swanwick. I started out in '87 in the tower at Heathrow itself before moving to RAF West Drayton in '91 and then down to Swanwick a couple of years ago. If you ever fancy a visit down here just email (flightlevels@o2.co.uk). Brother Phil is a jeweller in Standish.

Just stumbled upon this picture. That is me Ian Rutter, back row fourth from right (Pilot Officer Pickstock), brought back happy memories of the 1970s; my only regret in life was that I never joined the RAF

Comment by: Ian Rutter on 27th September 2012 at 21:57

For the record I do believe this to be 1974 and the camp was RAF Leconfield in South Yorkshire.

My father was W/o at 723 Sqn in the early 70's, he sadly died in 1976.

Comment by: Simon Topping on 12th March 2020 at 23:19

Hi, I am on the front row. L-R Simon Topping, Liam Devlin, Ian Rigby & Phil Hawkins. I think this is RAF Conningsby in July 1980. Mr Rigby did have 3 sons but John was not with us this time. This brings back some happy memories.
