An excellent series of photos.
My great uncle John Heaton was 2/5th Manchester Regiment and killed in France in 1917, he is buried in Cambrin military Cemetry. I wondered if anybody had any advice on how I can obtain information about the circumstances of his death?
My relative was 2nd Lieut Mellor. He was in Manchester 2nd/5th Btt. He was killed in June 1917.
There are some photos of Manchester regiments on the Manchester regiment Archives but I can't find any photos of 2nd/5th Btt.
I don't know where he fought or died but he is buried in the Cambrin Cemetery.
My great grandfather also served in 2/5th Manchester Regiment. He was 55799 Pte. John Gaskell. I have a copy of the war diary for this regiment. Very few photos are available of the 2/5th....just a couple of them in Ypres. They were involved in the third Battle of Ypres....commonly known as Passcendaele. My great grandad was captured and held as a POW in Germany where he was made to work in the coal mines. He survived and came home tomWigan a year After the war ended. He lived until well into his 90s. If anyone has any suggestions as to how I could find out about where he was held as a POW I would be really grateful.
The Red Cross' website holds records of soldiers who were POWs during WWI. Hopefully that helps.
Andrina where there any names of soldiers in the war diary, my relative Robert Pendlebury was in the 5th Manchesters he was killed in action. Any comments would be appreciated.
@ Andrina Silcock ;
there is rather a lot of info on the ICRC website on her relative. He was held at Dulmen and Friedrichfeld POW camps and was repatriated to Hull on the 27/11/1918.
