Hi Joseph
Fantastic info you have given me so much infomation in the last few days, we have just sat wondering for the last few years about these photos.
We are still not sure yet of names but we are a lot closer now because of your info. Great site this Wigan World.
thanks Joy
Your welcome Joy,it was no bother.
Both the Manchester Regt soldiers have 3 good conduct stripes and the one sitting has a wound stripe on his lower left arm.
Thanks Graham for that info. knew i came from good disciplined stock.
those are not good conduct stripes, they are overseas service chevrons

I have a database on the 1/5th manchesters. I have six Calderbanks. The men on the left have Manchester Regiment Capbadges. They have three overseas stripes. They were not overseas in 1914 as the chevron is a different colour. From that they served overseas from 1915 onwards. Out of the six, the first left in 1913, unless he re-enlisted its not him. Two others were either killed or died of woundes before the picture was taken. An Arthur Astley Calderbank joined in 1916. This will leave him out as he would not have three chevrons on his arm. This leaves No:3931 (1917 no: 201356) Sydney Calderbank and 4574 (1917 No: 201696) Joseph Calderbank. I have 5 Whites, but they do not fit the details in the picture, the closest disembarked on the 1st March 1916, so he wouldn't have three chevrons. Don't take this information as the gospel,it may be incorrect, but at least it gives you something to work with.
