Someone must have told them to stop moidering and go and play int backyard.
Definite date of 1948 and a good photo I think. The boy is not known to me. The fort was probably a really good toy maybe equivalent to todays Wii?????
It's only sixty years ago, which is no time really in historical terms, but what incredible change at incredible pace.

I had one of them forts, they were made of some sort of wood and painted a mid grey with some sort of textured paint, I also had one of them gollywog savings boxes made out of metal, you put a coin in its hand, and up it went to its mouth, Oops am I allowed to say gollywog ???

I bet they were a lot happier than today's kids. A wooden fort a few soldiers, and your imagination would keep you amused for hours. The problem with today's kids is that they can't amuse themselves. I remember I had a sack of off cuts. from Pemberton Caravans skip ( What a find it was to find these wooden off cuts in the skip) These wooden blocks were better than any toy I had. With a little imagination they could be turned into Forts, Garages, Castles, Buildings, Cars, Trains etc.

I remember those offcuts Ron. A relation used to drop a sackful off at my grandmother's for firewood. I spent many happy hours mucking about with them. As you say, they could be anything you wanted them to be, and you didn't need mains electricity or USB leads for them!

Forgot to mention in my last comment. With a couple of elastic garters(Large rubber bands for holding your socks up. That's when all boys up to age 11 wore short pants. ) and a few blocks you could make great "Pea Guns"

Evocative photo dk that reminds me of the fun and games we had in the backyard.Don't forget the re-cycled chimney-pot used as a flower pot.I used to put the stepladder on my tricycle and play fire-engines.
