Gosh that must have been an arduous journey as there would be no 'spring' in the coach... Then the fear of highway men as well. I found Miss Weeton's diary ( the Wigan governess)very interesting to read as a serial in 'Past Forward'. She travelled by coach quite a lot. Her descriptions about Wigan people and the surroundings were second to none. I believe you can buy it in book form nowadays.
Interesting leaflet, I wonder if Mick was riding shotgun?
What makes you think there would be no spring in the coach?
Carriage suspension is around from the Fourteenth Century.
The London Mayoral State Coach is of 1757 vintage. It is well sprung.
(I bet they would quickly fall to bits if they were not)
They would certainly have had a bumpy ride. Even The Queen admits the golden coach at her coronation was very 'uncomfortable' for the 5 mile journey wearing her crown- but I'm no expert!
I thought you were a Wagon Train fan Veronica.
Funnily enough Jack I am going to see if I can get 'The Last Wagon' on Ytube tonight. I would rather sit through a cowboy film than Eastenders, Corry or any of that rubbish! But I like 'Film Noir' best!
I remember Mam and Dad taking my brother and me to a cinema in St Helens to see that film, Veronica. My earliest recollections of the film were of a cowboy who had been tied to a wagon's wheel, and of the young lad who could also be seen at that time in the Lassie TV episodes. I get the impression that the film is up there with other great Westerns. Hope you manage to see it again.
I watched 'Garden of Evil' and 'Yellow Sky' Philip - hope to see 'The Last Wagon' tomorrow. Both very good films with Richard Widmark and Gary Cooper. I wanted to watch ' Take the High Ground' but couldn't get that one - only the trailer. The kind of films we used to go and watch at Scholes Pictures.... I never knew you could watch all these brilliant films!
