In Aspull Royal British Legion Club. The pit was at the back of Scot Lane - almost opposite the Club's premises on the other side of the Lane.
The list of names on this plaque is particularly poignant and interesting.
The first name is that of Lt. George Sidney James, one of four sons of the Vicar of Haigh who were killed in the Great War. He met his death at Gallipoli on June 4th 1915 - along with many local men from Wigan's pits who were Territorials in the 1st/5th Manchesters. He was an assistant manager at the pit.
Three of the others - Croston, Gray, and Gregory - have sequential Service numbers in the 10th Bn. of the Lancashire Fusiliers - and were all killed in the same engagement on September 18th 1918.

Mentioned on here is my Great Uncle, Matthew Caine, killed in action 17th August 1917. He was from The Manchester Regiment 11th Battalion. He was a stretcher bearer and was killed whilst trying to save the life of his comrade. He was survived by his wife and 4 children. RIP

Thanks for that bit of extra information - I had found the basic details of his death, but not the exact circumstances. I also found that his brother TH Caine, was taken PoW in April 1918.
Members of the Caine/ Cain/ Kane family turn up on a few of the WC&IC Co plaques.
