Brenda Benson sent the following info:

They look like a group of Wigan Corporation Bus Drivers and their female 'clippies' (ticket collectors) standing outside the Saxone/Cable Shoe Shop and Dewhurst's Butchers in Market Place, Wigan (where the new Royal Bank of Scotland (?) and Nationwide Building Society are today. 1960s I think. On the left of the shoe shop was the Corporation's Transport Office/Lost Property Office (where you went when you'd left your brolley on the bus!) and where the bus Inspectors used to hang out - the ones who stood in the centre of Market Place and blew a whistle signalling the last buses out of Wigan at 11pm, and they all drove off on the dot of 11 to their various destinations out of town. The sound of that whistle was terrifying if you happened to be still legging it up Makinson's Arcade only to see the tail end of the bus disappearing over the horizon and knowing you were walking home - and how much trouble you'd be in when you got there!

Sylvia,
Did Arthur Lawton live at number 5 Lambton Street Pemberton? We lived at No 3 and the Lawton family lived next door. 2 boys Steven and John.
