Not specific to Wigan, but still applicable to the Wigan Cotton Spinning Industry.

The ladies, and gentlemen, that worked in those cotton mills, must now suffer from earing problems. When I visited my mother in the factory, on a number of occasions, the noise of all the machinery was colossal. Sign language was the order of the day.

The women used to call it 'mee- mowing' .It was their own way of communicating across the machines and such as the weaving sheds.
