The tangible way that this photograph has a relationship with the people of Wigan, including myself. Is that it reminds us that our freedom, and peace, was brought about by the bravery of the young men, who fought in such fierce battles, many of them sacrificing their lives, for our sake

This is the original Pegasus Bridge, now erected in the Pegasus Museum, Normandy. Bullet scars can be seen to the right of the plaque.

Thanks Albert, all towns, including ours, should be grateful.

Been many times to Pegasus bridge and Madam Arlette's Cafe Gondree, spoken with her re the liberation, very moving. Walked on the original bridge outside the museum building Albert, last there in August 2014. Got the same photo minus the wreathes. Being there is a tearful experience thinking of all the brave people who took part in the action there.

Aubrey. You are absolutely correct. The reason I mentioned Wigan in particular. This website is unique to Wigan, and its people. Roy as you say it is a very tearful experience, especially looking around those very large military cemeteries. Whilst in the British Military Cemetery at Bayeux, something caused me to look at a particular grave. The person laid to rest there was, Pte. A.E. Short. Killed on D-Day + one. My name, and initials.

As you know, Albert, there is always someone ready to say, "But this isn't Wigan". But it doesn't matter; it stands for Wigan Lads who were soldiers as well as their contemporaries, wherever they came from, as do all such memorials, wherever they are.
