Services to mark the closure of the three Wigan Red Cross Voluntary Aid Detachment Hospitals were held on Sunday April 27th 1919.
One was held in the morning at Wigan Parish Church, and one was held in the evening at St Wilfrid's Standish.
At the latter the flag for Woodlands No. 3 Hospital (The Beeches) was laid up see Item #: 24845. The flags of Woodlands 1 and 2 (The Woodlands and The Marie-Bonne) were said to have been laid up at All Saints on a previous occasion.
This plaque commemorates the event - it's quite small in comparison with the plaque at St Wilfrid's, and took a little finding - it is high on a pillar in the space under the tower.
A union flag is in the church, with a query as to whether it is the one laid up by the Red Cross. I would expect a Red Cross flag to be a Red Cross flag - not the Union flag. However, the report I have of the event mentions that flags were laid up - despite what the plaque says. So there may have been a Red Cross flag and a Union flag.
