I remember the distinctive flashing sign above Ashtons' shop.
Harold Cottriall was the manager there for many years. A real gentleman.
This brings back memories of my smoking days. Cigs were hard to come by, especially well known brands and I smoked Balkan Sobranie at times. They has gold coloured filter tips and smelled horrible. Does anyone remember "Pasha" cigs? These were another Turkish brand and tobacconists made you buy them if you wanted a packet of woodbines.
£13 odd was a lot of money to spend on cigs and smoking paraphernalia in those days, might just about buy you 40 Benson & Hedges these days!
Funny how we have preconceptions about things. I have always thought that Ashton's were solely a local concern when they obviously had branches in Chorley and Warrington.
Could the prices on the left be Retail prices for goods bought wholesale?
Paid wtih a cheque with one month's credit! How posh is that!
