If this is in pounds, it seems a bit expensive for 1939.
I'm wondering if it is nineteen shillings!

It is shillings Margaret,4 x 6d buttonholes 2 shillings.

It's 19 shillings,19 pounds would be a months wage in 1939.

It was more usual to write such an amount using the solidus, i.e.

19/- A format which has completely disappeared: sad as this goes back even further than the penny, and is derived from the Imperial Roman coin, 'the Solidus'.
