My grandad, who at this period was a furnace keeper at Kirkless, used to say the same.
the charabang used to be a coal wagon in the week and do day trips at weekend
My father related charabang trips to The Black Bull in Mawdesley (HELL Hob; so named after a very large poker)
Websters ran them on a regular basis taking the back off a lorry and fixing a bus body at weekends.I believe a Webster became involved in running the "Bull" at one time ??
I went to live in Mawdesley in 1950, by that time 2 coaches from Liverpool visited the " Bull" avery saturday night.
Only noveaue riche commuter snobs and wealthy retirees live in Mawdesley these days. The Black Bull closed years ago, most probably it'll be demolished and turned in to another luxury ostentatious house/mansion for a snobby commuter.
It's weird reading about a time when Mawdesley wasn't just a snobbish commuter village for rich people.
