Please, somebody fix it.

Comment by: Stuart Naylor on 2nd March 2012 at 10:57

It is alright saying “fix the Seven Stars” but my answer to that would be “WHY” ????

Because the trouble with the Seven Stars is that it is not really 'at' anywhere, it is not really in Newtown and it is not really in Wigan Town Centre, it is marooned on its own at somewhere in between and it as been like that since most of the houses in Wallgate, were demolished in the slum clearance programs of the 1960's
I think that it would be better to demolish the Seven Stars and then landscape the site and put that horrible 'Face' there, which at present is at the top of the Wiend/Millgate, then everybody travelling towards the canal bridge, can see the changing 'Face' of Wigan.

Too late to "fix it" Dennis, it's in the process of being demolished right now.
Apparently they're building a car showroom on the site.
Thanks for putting the pic up, Dennis.

That is/was a beautiful building with much thought in the design..shame.

Ho great Winder, just what Wigan needs, another Car Showroom. Wigan can't afford to keep losing buildings like this.

Comment by: Frank on 2nd March 2012 at 19:39

It has/had character and style and any town "worth its salt" would be proud to lay claim to it........er, except perhaps Wigan.

Comment by: Joan Beckett (Wilding) on 2nd March 2012 at 22:17

I had my wedding reception there in 1971

Shame to see it go.
Such a lovely building with a lot of character.
It would be nice if a small part of the masonary got saved, refurbished & incorporated into part of the new car showroom, like what was done with the old vulcanite building over the road,as part of the old vulcanite building was rebuilt into the new plumbing & bathroom show room (& it looks good too).

Why build yet another car showroom?,theres already two lying vacant on the same stretch (formerly occupied by Gordons Honda & the other by Suzuki).

Winder, there's an vacant car showroom right next door to the old Seven Stars, been vacant for a couple of years. typical Wigan planning as usual.

If you C&P the link it will take you to the Wigan Council Website. That is where the info has come from.

Proposal To demolish existing pub building and erect single storey car showroom building with associated outdoor car display area

Comment by: Jimmy on 3rd March 2012 at 21:19

The latest approved plan on the council website is to demolish the pub, and erect a single storey car showroom, with associated outdoor car display area.

Went past today and it's a very sad sight to see. I take Stuarts point that the building was no longer viable as a Public House but surely the thing to do with such buildings is to find another use for them. To simply tear the building down and replace it with yet another miserable Car Lot ( which, no doubt will end up as derelict as the one next door) is not the answer.

Well done to the Wigan Planning department as yet another characteristic building hits the dust !!

This is the pub i started my drinking in back in the mid 70's. The Landlords name was Ben and if my memory serves me right, his wife was in a wheelchair. pints of Mild and then swayed off home back to Pemberton.

Comment by: David Simm on 30th March 2012 at 01:27

Growing up we always referred the that area as Seven Stars, for obvious reason, It was at the end of the street where the corporation bus depot was and if I'm right at the junction of Pottery Rd & Walgate on the canal bank

I was pleased to read everyones comments about the Seven Stars as it was all very true. My parents Jean and Benny Holleron were tenant Landlords in the 60s and 70s possibly 80s, can't remember when they retired. I remember all the workers coming in for a pint or 2 in their lunchtimes and straight after work. Most lived in the little back to back terraced houses all around. We also got a lot of barges and narrow-boats stopping by the bridge and popping in for a drink. We had regular darts and domino matches against other Wigan pubs and we had a full size snooker / billiard table. I was a barmaid occasionally and my husband and I helped with all the wedding receptions in the clubroom upstairs
