Wigan Album

In my youth I went to the Wigan Hippodrome, on numerous occasions. You would get many varied comments shouted out, especially from the Gods( The upper circle). Then the attendents' torches would flash all over the place. I remember one occasion. There was an act on, a performer was able to answer any question appertaining to sport, that any member of the audiance wanted to ask him. One chap shouted out. "When will Nelson geris eye back.". When it came on the news, 1957 or begining, of 58.that the theatre had been burned down, it was such a shock. At the time I was lying in my pit(bed),in my billet,at R. A. F. Cranwell, counting the days to my demob.

I was at this concert,aged five, and remember Hylda Baker and Cynthia very well. However as we left it was raining and I saw a young man being "helped" from a black Maria, he was fighting the police. I can recall even now thinking he would be wet as his shirt was ripped off. It upset me for days afterwards and made a more lasting impression than the concert.However thanks for posting as I enjoyed seeing the cast list again.
