They also had some, along with 4wd ex-army lorries, on which they drove people out over the sands, so that you could actually see the sea at Southport.
The Central Electricity Generating Boars acquired a fleet of them for accessing remote sites, especially on Scottish lochs. Some of these are now in use in Liverpool Docks, giving rides around the city centre, and then straight into Albert Dock.
I too remember seeing these vehicles when we went on the Labour Club trips from Platt Bridge in the 50's. However I wasn't allowed on as Dad said he'd had enough of them during the war! I had to wait until I was 60 when my daughter took me on the wackerquacker at Liverpool Docks. The guide told us that the Duks had been built mainly by women workers at General Motors in the USA
DUKW is a US Army acronym meaning D = 1942, U = utility or amphibious, K = 6 wheel drive and W = twin rear axles. All DUKW chassis numbers begin with 353.
Remember these at Southport in the early-mid 60s.
Hello Ducky!!!
They had these at Blackpool as well and they still have at least one in Liverpool.
The DUKW's were still used in Jersey just a couple of years ago. They ferried visitors out to Elizabeth Castle.Their modern replacements just don't cut the mustard.I'll look for a photo,Fred.
I put a photo on The Forum under photos of everything else,Fred.
