A good photo and an interesting shot of the town centre.

Wigan Market Place, Jack.
Late 1960s, early '70s at a guess. The Black Horse pub can be seen on right of shot, and the red granite frontage of Deacons Bank on the left. The building with the cupola is the old Midland Bank on the corner of Library St.

This photo shows Wigan Market Place. On the left just up from the building with the scaffolding is Library Street.

The "top of wigan" looks like the light on wires where the traffic bobby used to stand is still there and the black Horse pub is still there, late 60s or possibly early 70s.

St. George's Day parade??? I was a girl guide and did this for a couple of years, although this is pre my time looking at the uniforms.

Was it Deacons Bank? I always knew it as Martins. Broadmeads Radio shop is still on the corner of Library Street, this changed to Civic Sores in 1969 so the photo was taken before then. I worked there in 1970.

It is St. George's Day Parade, Year 1958

Comment by: George on 8th April 2011 at 17:53

Wasn't Deacon's Bank the one that was further down Wallgate on the right hand side, as we look at the photo, next to the Post Office?

Comment by: Mick on 8th April 2011 at 18:18

Kenee you are correct - Martins Bank, not Deacons. A mistake on my part.

Got it now thanks, the white front on the building that's now the moon threw me.

The scaffolding on the left is probably related to the builng subsequently occupied by Dunns Gents Outfitters. Prior to demolition the building which stood there was the Cross Keys Punlic House. If someone knows when that was demolished, the picture can be dated quite accurately.

There's one thing for sure, it was a better Wigan than today.
