This car used to belong to Ken Gubbins who had a second hand book stall outside of the market hall. It was a really nice car and was the mark just after Vauxhall's really tatty model which was a rust bucket. The only problem that it had was the clutch which was hydraulic used to creep, and in traffic would stall the car, I'll bet that the reg JEK 356 on this model would be worth something today

is there someone behind the wheel or is it me

Yes, it is our son Dave behind the wheel, pretending to drive. He was about 9 yrs old at the time. If you look closely, you will see the old Blundell Arms pub at the right hand top corner of the pic. It was taken in Foundry Lane Highfield. We had parked there for the walking day procession

Many Years ago I remember a place down Foundry Lane, that sold used trucks, George jones and his son Les. I think after that the land was used as a car scrap yard.

I remember a mate of mine's father buying this model brand new about 1961/62 and my mate complaining that his dad was too tight to pay for a heater which then was still an optional extra! This pic brought back memories of how cold cars could be in winter back then.

I had an Hillman Imp 1971, no heater blower, coldest thing on earth. Snow would not even thaw off my shoes.

John, if my memory serves me right, even at their best the Hillman Imp heaters were rubbish!

Yes Derek, most British cars of that era were made by Smiths, they also made most of the electricl equipment aswell.
