3rd down with the lightening conducter on the pointed roof, was NatWeat Bank & still is.
Butcher Browns sandwiched between NatWest & Boots. The door next to the bank was leading to the staircase, up to Browns on the first floor ;o)

Comment by: Gerry on 11th June 2010 at 21:20

just after the bank there was an entry leading to Woodcock St it came out near that builders merchants named...?

Comment by: Wigwann on 12th June 2010 at 09:06

So glad to read that I wasn't the only one terrified of Mr Brown, my dad always called him "Butcher" not exactly the name to calm a frightened 8 year old!

The alley you refer to Gerry, was at the side of Timpsons shoe shop, some dispute over it's name. some say Haywardens Yard, others an extension of Hope St.
The builders Merchant was Crank & Burtons, on Woodcock St.

Comment by: fred foster on 13th June 2010 at 07:48

I think that the builders merchant was Crank and Burton

Comment by: dave johnson on 13th June 2010 at 10:33

The enterance to Browns was the door actually under the awning and is still there today, next to where Greenhalghs bakers is.

Comment by: Gerry on 13th June 2010 at 11:26

Art the one next to Timpsons was well know but there was another one (only narrow enough for one person to walk down) next to the bank, and yes it was Crank And Burtons it came out next too
