in the 60s when there was a rail around this corner you had to have a season tocket to stand there
As the song goes, Gerry...."Ah yes, I remember it well"!
stood there many a time as a lad eating woolies pick n mix that accidently fell into my pockets, looks like they are about to raid the uncle joes tray hehe!
On the boots the chemist side third building countin Boot's there used to Brown's Dental Surgery
Remember Browns Dentist, not that going to any dentist is looked on as a pleasure, but I have bad memories of there...
in the 60s we used to meet there saturday afternoon before walking down to Central Park to watch Wigan, they played on saturdays then .proper rugby !
3rd down with the lightening conducter on the pointed roof, was NatWeat Bank & still is.
Butcher Browns sandwiched between NatWest & Boots. The door next to the bank was leading to the staircase, up to Browns on the first floor ;o)
just after the bank there was an entry leading to Woodcock St it came out near that builders merchants named...?
So glad to read that I wasn't the only one terrified of Mr Brown, my dad always called him "Butcher" not exactly the name to calm a frightened 8 year old!
The alley you refer to Gerry, was at the side of Timpsons shoe shop, some dispute over it's name. some say Haywardens Yard, others an extension of Hope St.
The builders Merchant was Crank & Burtons, on Woodcock St.
I think that the builders merchant was Crank and Burton
The enterance to Browns was the door actually under the awning and is still there today, next to where Greenhalghs bakers is.
Art the one next to Timpsons was well know but there was another one (only narrow enough for one person to walk down) next to the bank, and yes it was Crank And Burtons it came out next too
oooo i went to browns in the early 70s i only needed a couple of fillings as my tooth was aching he took three teeth out and not under anasthetic and every one went flying across the room i was shaking like a leaf what a butcher!
my nickname for that dentist,s was brown, langford, lawton and ben turner
