yes rev long, its william mawdsley he is my uncle my mothers brother, and all the info is correct,my neice spelled it wrong, some of our family have been to see his grave ,i will go some time hopefully, his name is on a plaque on the wall of ince parish church ,the plaqe has been replaced with a new one and they have spelled it incorrect we only noticed it when we went to a funeral last year and we were looking at it ,it was a bit upsetting but lots of people spell it wrong ,one of my cousins who noticed it said he may complain about it and they might put it right but dont know if he did i will make a point of having a look this week.

I don't think it's now possible to do anything about the Christ Church memorial plaque. The whole history of this plaque has always been a mystery to me - why was the original plaque put on the church in the first place, rather than the names being inscribed on the steps of the WW1 Cenotaph in Ince Cemetery on Warrington Road - the pattern followed in most places? Why was the plaque put up so soon after the war - before all the casualties were known, and before the official cut-off date for declaring those who died of wounds immediately after the war? Unfortunately, the opportunity was missed to correct the omissions when the new plaque was installed. By then Dr Eric McPherson's book, Roll of Honour, had been published. This contains the most comprehensive list of Wigan casualties possible, and records the Memorials around the Borough where their names are inscribed. Had the organisers used this, they would have ensured all were honoured. A well-intentioned effort which sadly didn't quite achieve its aims.
