Lovely, a good old Corporation Bus, I must have got on a Beech Hill route bus to go to my grandparents house back in the early 50's, got off at Cherry Gardens.
that must be the top of market st.
It was the middle of Market St, opposite Woodcock St. The first one in Wigan...My favourite in the mid/late 50's
Its def further down Market St, The Crofters is further left at the beginning of the block.
yes its definately Market street, i used to work across the road a little further up at Wynstanleys jewellers. happy days.
think first chinese was in little arcade next to Mesnes st,halfway down arcade and upstairs
Helen The Beech Hill bus did not go to Cherry Gardens. You must mean Green Hill
I beg to differ, the one at Royal Arcade was a fair while after The Happy Palace. In the mid '50's I used to have a drink up the "Emp" Friday nights late dancing with a friend "Ting Qa" head waiter at the HP..It was the only one in Wigan then.
The Happy Palace later became the world famous
'Sweaty Bettys' indian where I along with many others spent time after a night on the town happy daze!
I remember Barnes travel agents, next door very well.
Anybody recall the slaughter house at the back of those shops? It was next door to Gibson & Youngs Glassware Warehouse, the same people who had the stall in the old Market Hall
The abbatoir was JJ Forster's (I think). Barnes Travel Agency was owned by Mrs King whose ex-husband was Frank King who had a butcher shop further up Market Street, near to The Crofters. This later became 'The Chippery'.
i lived in Bluebell Avenue, Beech Hill, which was the terminus for the 25 route. When this route first operated in the very early sixties the general opinion was that it was a lousy service since it was only on a twenty minute frequency!
Does anyone have any information about the happy palace? the manager/ employees names? someone called harry lun and pak tak chan?
