The 5th Battalion Manchester Regiment was the T.A. battalion based in Wigan

My grandad Robert Harlow, served in the first world war with the 5th Manchester Regiment, and for the last months of that conflict, he was a prisoner of the Germans. After the war, he returned to his job as a printer for the Wigan Observer, there he started work in 1904 and retired in 1960 after 56,years. He worked his way up to be machine manager a position he held for 40 years. He died in 1979, age 86.
