Item #: 11207
The hallmark is Birmingham 1925, but the maker's stamp relates to a french maker.
Have a look on Stuff{Wigan World] theres an article about Ancient and Loyal it may help
I'd expect a medal to carry an inscription giving its purpose. It may simply be a souvenir ornament - perhaps for the end of an Albert watch chain.
There is an inscription on the reverse side, a second image hasn't been put on the site. The inscription reads, Wigan & D.S.S.F.L. It belonged to my grandfather who lived in Spring View.
Is there no 'A' between the double Ss and the FL? I have two medallions awarded to Horace Valentine (they're on this site somewhere) as a member of St Mary's (Lower Ince & Spring View)soccer team, marking their winning of the Reserve Shield of the Wigan & District Sunday School Amateur Football League in 36-7 and 38-9. Looks as if you have an earlier version of those medals - which have the same castle design in a shield in their centre - they lack the Wigan motto, however.
Was your uncle associated with St Mary's?
It's possibly Wigan and District Sunday School Football League
I beleive the initials stand for Wigan & District Secondary Schools Football League.
Wigan & District Sunday School Football League???
