This picture is circa 1948. My uncle, Arthur Jackson, played for the team and can be seen holding the ball.

I wonder if anyone else remembers this. Sometime in the early fifties I worked at the Vic and was working one Saturday morning. This was in the wintertime and every miner knows how cold it is at the pit botton. At the time I worked on the haulage with lots of young lads all in their early teens. The Vic was not one of the larger pits and when winding men at the end of the shift it only used one.. deck at a time. This particular Saturday a gang of us had moved away from the shaft, and the cold, which meant we would be the last to ascend the shaft so it was all about keeping warm. After a while of trying to keep warm probably discussing the game that afternoon someone suggested that we had ourselves a game of rugby here and now because I must mention evey miner knows how spacious at the pit bottom it is.So that Saturday morning an event took place that,I am sure, has never occurred anywhere else on this planet.I might add that I worked down the south pit in the Wigan four feet under deputy Stan Holland the Wigan five under deouty Walt Green.
